"Promise me something, Mar?" Emmeline Vance asked as the layed on a blanket in their backyard, looking up at the stars, the year after they had graduated.
"Yeah, Em?" Marlene McKinnon said, looking over at her girlfriend of three years, the love of her life.
"Promise me- promise me you won't die, Mar. Promise me you won't die, no matter what." Emmeline said, staring up at the stars.
"Em, I don't think I can pro-" Marlene was promptly cut off.
" Promise me, Mar." Emmeline said, looking over at Marlene with wide, scared eyes. A tear ran from her eye, and Marlene brushed it away with her thumb.
"I promise Em. I promise I won't die."
~~-One Year Later-~~
"Mar?! Marlene!?" Emmeline yelled worriedly as she battled a Death eater. Her and Marlene were on a Order mission, and one moment they were fighting back to back, but now...
"Reducto!" She yelled, blowing almost all the Death eaters up and killing them instantly. "Mar! Marlene!" She called out desperately. She sighed in relief and threw herself at Marlene when she walked out of the nearby forest, hair disheveled and a splatter of blood on her shirt. "Mar! Are you hurt?" She examined Marlene for any hidden wounds.
"I'm fine, Em. It's not my blood," Marlene took a deep breath "It's not my blood."
Emmeline's eyes were wide and terrified. "Oh, Mar! I thought you were hurt, or killed, or-"
Marlene cut Emmeline off by pulling her into an embrace and kissing her. She broke away after a few moments. "But I'm not, Em. I'm right here, and I'm not leaving on you. I'm not dying and leaving you all alone. I promise."
~~-June 7th, 1981-~~
Dumbledore had sent Emmeline word as soon as he knew. Marlene McKinnon had died that night, killed by Death eaters. At first Emmeline had gone into a rage, throwing vases and lamps at walls. But, by now, she was laying in their bed in a cocoon of their covers and comforter, her head buried in one of Marlene's shirts., crying She had worn the shirt the night before and it still smelt like her.
"Why did it have to be her?!" She wailed out, sobbing. "Why couldn't it have been me? I loved her! Why couldn't it have been me?!" She rocked back and forth, clutching the shirt to her chest.
Her mind flashed over all of their memories together. They day they met. When they officially became best friends. When they admitted their feelings for each other. When they got together. The first time they made love. When they graduated. When they bought their house together. The lsit went on and on and on.
Emmeline looked up to the sky."Why did you go, Mar? Why did you leave me? Why did you leave me all alone? Why did you die? Why did you have to die?" She questioned, though she knew she wouldn't get an answer. "You promised, Mar. You promised." She whimpered, rocking back and forth and placing a kiss on Marlene's shirt.
"You promised."
