Mary walked into the office. Murray was at his typewriter.
"Hi, Mur."
"Hi, Mare. Oh say, I meant to ask you, can you tell me a little about this upcoming WJM Day?"
"Sure. It will be held on July 24. There'll be food and games, and the public will get to meet our celebrities. The money collected will go to charity."
"That's a good idea."
"I think so, too. There'll even be a dunk talk there, and Ted will sit on it."
"Well, I'll be sure to throw out the first ball!"
She laughed. "I'll bet you will!"
The time came for WJM Day. It was held in a local park about five miles from the station. Virtually everybody from WJM was there, ,and so were many Minnesotans.
The time came for Ted to get on the tank. He wore a bathing suit and a t-shirt that read "I'm the greatest." However, he looked at the tank and shook his head.
"I'm not getting on that tank!," he said.
"You're not?," said Mary.
"No. Getting dunked into water is beneath the dignity of a newscaster."
"Not in your case, Ted," said Murray.
"I won't do it!" He walked away.
Mary and Murray looked at each other. "Well, maybe we can get Gordy to do it," Murray said.
"I'll do it."
"With your clothes on?"
"Why not. These are old clothes, anyway." She wore blue jeans and a t-shirt.
"Are you sure, Mare?"
"Yeah, why not."
She slipped her sandals off, and Murray helped her onto the seat over the tank.
A line began to form. People paid $.50 for three balls. The second person was the first to dunk her into the water. She managed to take it with a smile.
Ted watched the proceedings and shook his head. After Mary's third dunking, he came over to her.
"You can get out of the tank, Mare; I'll get on it."
This surprised her. "You will?"
"Yes. I'm sorry for the way I behaved earlier."
"Well, OK."
She got out, and he climbed on it.
The line got even bigger. Murray joined it; he dunked Ted with his first ball!
Afterward, Murray walked over to Mary. She had a towel around her shoulders, but was still barefooted.
"I'll bet you don't often go swimming with your clothes on!"
She laughed. "Nope! It's kinda nice in this heat."
"I'll hand it to Ted, he did the right thing."
"Yes, he did. I'm kinda proud of him." She looked at him. He was actually laughing and carrying on with the ball-throwers. "He seems to be enjoying himself."
"Yes, he is."
