Effy can barely see through the crowd of people. It's hard to make out anything in the low-lit club. She's on some drugs that she doesn't remember the name of. It's working pretty well since she's seeing colors and everything is in crazy patterns and it's hard to make out. She's dancing with some boy she found in the club. She's not sure if she'll go with him or not. She probably will. It's hard to hear what the boy's whispering in her ear. The music is so loud that the floor is shaking. The lights in the club are flickering red and black. She's enjoying herself, just by herself, being free. She closes her eyes for just a split second before opening them again, and continuing to dance. Through the crowd, through the lights of the club flickering, and through the loudness of the music, she sees and hears one person, Cook. She's not sure why but she's smiling now, her signature smirk, she supposes. She's walking over to him and she sees him smile as he spots her through the crowd.
"Cook." Effy says.
"Effy." Cook retorts. Effy smiles again. "How are ya?" Cook asks, though she can barely hear him.
"Smashed."
"Fuckin' awesome huh babe?"
Effy nods her head in agreement and the conversation is over as soon as she kisses him. His lips are like fire and hers are like ice, they collide perfectly. She's biting on his lip and his hands are on her waist. She pulls back and tilts her head to the left.
"Cool." she says and walks away.
That's how Effy is.
Effy and Cook are sitting on the pier and Effy's eyes are closed. She's taking in the smell of the sea, the sound of the water crashing underneath them. She's sure there's something between her and Cook but she's not going to look for it. She knows that he loves her, she's not too sure of her feelings. There are things she doesn't want to explore yet, and her feelings for Cook are one of them. Things are complicated, things are always complicated. Nothing can be perfect, that's just not real. That's what Pandora said to her. She knows Panda's right. Cook breaks the silence finally.
"Ever think about what's gonna happen to us Eff?" Cook says which Effy just keeps her eyes shut and sighs.
"No." she responds as she opens her eyes.
"Why?" Cook raises an eyebrow.
"That's boring." Effy shrugs. Cook scrunches up his nose and sets his hand on Effy's cheek. "Wanna go for a swim babe?" he teases.
Effy doesn't say a word and stands up, pulls off her shirt, and jumps. She doesn't have a second thought about it. She crashes into the water and the sudden coldness gives her slight goose bumps and she's underwater, her eyes open, staring at the scenery around her. Sand on the floor, she feels it with her feet. She sees a fish in the far distance and she wonders what she would do if she were a fish, where she would go, what would happen. A sudden splash next to her tells her that Cook's down in the water next to her. Cook's lower half is in the water and she figures he's floating. Effy pops up and looks at the ocean around them.
"Interesting."
"What?" Cook turns his head to look at Effy, who's focus is in the far distance.
"How unimportant we all are in this world."
That's how Effy is.
"I fucking love you Effy." Cook says one day when him and Effy were sitting on her bed.
"Everyone loves me." she points out.
"I just really fucking love you." Cook repeats.
"I know." Effy nods her head, agreeing with herself. She knows she loves him back at this point, she just won't admit that.
That's how Effy is.
