If Only They Knew

It just…hurt. So much.

He was the blond boy who won everyone's hearts with his annoying ramen feasts and his knack for never giving up on the impossible. He smiled, always flashed that shiny toothy grin of his. He was the second sun of Konoha, the second light that gave others hope when all else was lost.

Hope. He gave everyone hope, including her.

She was a fiery-spirited medic, who always appeared to be swooning over that raven-haired guy, and somehow waiting for him to come back, but immediately snapped out of her romantic melancholy whenever the prankster was around.

Really. Did he ever grow tired of pestering her?

He beamed yet again, but when he disappeared into the night, there he was, his shadow looming over the lonely bench where a friend of his left.

He arrived in front of it, remembering the aches in his heart whenever he had to see her crying and weeping for that guy whom she hoped would show up and declare that he's changed; and unfortunately, it never happened. Yet.

His smile would disappear once in a while, when he was behind a wall separating him from his acquaintances. A sad shade of blue would blend in his eyes.

He would punch the wall and remind himself of the 'promise of a lifetime'. He would stare out into the forests and the clearings to search for the one boy that she was looking for.

If only she knew

He was right there next to her, being her crying shoulder, reassuring her that everything would be all right. Though he wasn't even sure that there was truth in his words.

And he was tired; tired of playing second fiddle to someone who wasn't even three feet away from him and her. He wondered if there would be a time when she stopped crying for Sasuke and started smiling for him.

She wondered if he ever notices, that sometimes she would forget about the lost boy and instead focus on what she had right now. After all, it had been years since she last saw that love of hers, and wondered if she had little of that love left in her heart.

Maybe occasionally, she would blush because of that endearing suffix he added to her name, maybe, she loved hanging out at Ichiraku's, watching him devour heaps of ramen, and maybe, she was beginning to realize that maybe, she wasn't annoyed because of him, after all.

If only he knew

Beneath all those happy masks, she knew that he was hurting from the inside. She knew that he was still finding a million ways to fulfill his impossible promise.

She wished he would just give up and finally understand that she doesn't want to wait anymore.

She wished he could clearly see that all along, she was falling for him.

There are circumstances when hiding behind numerous lies probably isn't the best action to make.

But there are circumstances in which the fact that 'lying wouldn't be the best action there is' would be rendered void, simply because of fear of the unknown.

Because pretending that they were just plain friends made it a little less complicated.

If only they knew

He was the blond boy who won everyone's hearts, yet could not even fix his own.

She was a fiery-spirited medic, but even she was afraid of healing the scars running deep down in his subconscious.

It hurts both of them- the knowledge that no one knew what the other was thinking.

It just…hurt. So much.
