A Moment by Cordelia Buffy Greenleaf Potter
I don't own Liberty's Kids, but it's a cool show.
I hope you like my fic.... it's a little romance thing.
James Hiller stood by the window of the printing house. His back was to the store and his face was turned up to the starry night beyond the window.
He was contemplating some memory, distant from that little corner of Philadelphia as his mind raced through the past....
Only fragments of stories told what happened that night. Over fourteen years ago, his parent's modest house was ablaze with flames, the crushing destruction of fire eating the defenseless wooden structure of the home.
And his parents were gone, long since lost to the past..... James' fate had brought him here after he had sought out Dr. Benjamin Franklin, the prominent inventor of several life-saving inventions as the lightning rod. Fate had also lead him to meet Henri LeFevre and Sarah Phillips, both important figures in his new life.
The mischievous French boy and the formal English girl had become his friends in the past few months. Henri was like a younger brother to James, always in trouble but always fun and rambunctious. Sarah, on the other hand, seemed always judgemental of his actions and etiquette.
"Hmph. What do I care what she thinks? All she does is complain anyway, wishing that she could be back in England. England is definitely not better than America," James grumbled to himself. Suddenly, a wistful pang in his heart brought his eyes once again to gaze at the distant moon and cold stars.
"I wish that you could have seen me now, Mother and Father. I met Dr. Franklin, and I'm even a reporter now!" thought the American boy sadly.
"James Hiller, why have you not moved from that window for nearly twenty minutes?" came a curious British voice. James turned around to see Sarah Phillips. Why did she have to intrude now?
"No reason. Why do you care, anyway?" asked James, slightly annoyed.
"Oh, I just wanted to see.... if you were bothered by something or if you were sad," Sarah said quickly, feeling that she had revealed too much of her concern.
James' eyebrows lifted in surprise. "Um.... I was.... thinking about--- nothing. Nevermind." he responded briskly, his eyes watching the floor.
"I see. Oh, I am sorry for complaining before about the locket. It was very important to me, as it was the only thing I had from my father," Sarah said quietly.
"Do you remember your parents, James? You are an orphan, right?" she inquired, trying to break the silence.
"Yes, I am," James said, and then continued: "and I do not remember my parents. They died when I was a baby, after lightning struck our house. It caught on fire because we did not have a lightning rod."
He stood in silence and tried to imagine what kinds of things he missed out on with his parents. All of the lost days that could have been spent exploring in the woods, eating outdoors on balmy days, flying heaven-bound kites...
"James, I am sorry," Sarah said in a compassionate voice. She put a hand on his shoulder and he encircled her quickly with his arm, grinning slyly.
"Thank you, Sarah," James said quickly as he pulled away. He expected Sarah to scold him for sneaking a hug but instead she smiled at him, her face faintly red.
"You are welcome, James Hiller," she said as she left the room with a shy grin. James didn't know what was happening, but he felt a slight change in their relationship, and he liked it.
The End.
Ok review if you like Liberty's Kids or Sarah and James as a couple!
