Best Friends

For years Karl Agathon had been her person, her go-to, the man who got her out of fights and kept her alive. Then he was stranded on Caprica at the end of the worlds and Captain Lee Adama had taken his place as Kara Thrace's best friend. It had been a few months since Kara had found him on Caprica and brought him home. While she seemed to be the Kara he had left behind, something had changed in their friendship, something that he didn't know how to fix. He made his way to the bunkroom where he found Kara and her new best friend Lee laying on her bunk. He opened his locker trying to ignore the two as they laughed over something.
"Hey Helo !" Kara said with a rare smile on her face.
"Kara. Captain." He said turning toward them.
"Off-shift it's Lee." Lee said from his spot next to Kara.
"Okay, Lee." He said coldly.
"Why are you being such a ass Karl?" Kara asked noticing the difference in her friend.
"I'm not being an ass, Kara. Just going about my day, minding my own business." He said, turning back to his locker. He must have let his feelings flash across his face.
"Oh my Gods. You're jealous? You're jealous of Lee?" Kara said laughing.
"I don't see the funny in it, Buck." Karl said gritting his teeth while he glanced at the other man who excused himself, leaving Karl and Kara alone in the bunkroom. Kara got off her bunk and came to stand beside him.
"So are you really jealous of Lee? Is that why you've been acting like a ass?" Helo sighed then turned toward her.
"You're my friend Kara, have been since we met the last year at the academy. But when we both got stationed here, you became my best friend. I guess now that your real best friend is back, that's over."
"Just because Lee is here doesn't change you being my best friend."
"Yes it does Kara! Ever since I met you our friendship has been haunted by the friendship you have with Lee. When we came here, that was gone. Lee was on Atlantia and you two weren't talking! I finally got my best friend all to myself. Then I come back from that hell that used to be home to find out that Lee Adama has taken my place!" He turned to look at Kara as he finished and he saw a little smirk form on her face.
"Ghessh you and Lee are so alike it's scary."
"Kara, comparing me with Adama right now is not a good idea."
"Lee said the same thing after the worlds ended. He didn't know where he fit into my life anymore. He didn't know where he fit because of you." She said with a roll of her eyes.
"So what now?"
"Now we rearrange some more. You're both my best friends and nothing is going to change that. Even if both of you act like three year olds," she said with a smile.
"So are we going to be okay? I've already lost Sharon. I can't lose you too." Helo asked slowly.
"I'm not going anywhere. Besides I can't die. I have two gods protecting me," she said shutting his locker and grabbing his hand.
"Where are we going?" He asked as she pulled him out the hatch.
"To the CAG's office. I want to watch you and Lee work out your um---- issues." By her laugh Karl could tell they were going to be in for a long night. But if the long night meant finding his place in Kara's life again he would gladly do it.
