"Could you give us a minute?"

Brennan swallowed hard when she heard him ask the question, and watched as the medical personnel left to give them some privacy.

She wondered what was going on inside his head right now. She wondered if a part of him blamed her just as much as she blamed herself for all of this. How could she not have noticed before? How could his condition have eluded her until now? She had gone over all the facts a thousand times over. His fall on the ice, and the resulting hallucination, the story of his ghost-sighting. Why hadn't she seen how all of this fit together before? For once, she didn't have the answers, just the questions. Questions that would continue to haunt her until he came back out of surgery.

He would come out of surgery.

He would be okay...he just had to be.

"Listen Bones, if I don't make it--"

"Booth...you're gonna be fine."

"Yeah, but if I'm not--I, I want you to have my stuff..you know? For a kid."

Brennan couldn't even stop the flow of tears even if she tried. She'd been on a emotional roller-coaster ever since the situation in the interrogation-room. "Please, don't say that."

Booth tried to give her an encouraging smile, but just the sight of her breaking up was enough to make him come undone. "Bones, you told me that statistically I stand a good chance, remember?"

"I..." She averted her eyes, as her hands grabbed the railing of the hospital-bed for support. "That is correct..." she choked out through a haze of tears. "Logically this should be encouraging to me, but.."

"But not all of it is logic, Bones," Booth muttered softly, as he sat up right and reached out to cup her chin with his right hand. "Not nearly all of it," he repeated as he held her eyes with his own.

Slowly he leaned forward touching her lips with his own. It was a gentle kiss, their lips barely touching. More of an affirmation than a confession. It was over almost as sudden as it had begun, and Booth pulled back, while still cupping her chin with one of his hands. He saw her twin orbs swirling with confusion mixed with a twinge of sadness. He knew she wouldn't say it, maybe she never would. It didn't matter.

He felt it.

"Booth, I..." Brennan struggled to find the words to convey what she felt.

"I know," Booth said softly. He finally let go of her chin, and moved his hand to a place on her chest close to where her heart was. They shared another look, and then she smiled at him, a sad smile, but a smile nonetheless. "I know, Bones."

They stayed like that for a few seconds more before he motioned towards the nurses. "I'm ready," he called out. But his eyes never left hers.

Brennan watched transfixed as they carted him away towards the operating-room in slow-motion. Her hand moved up to touch her lips, but almost off her own accord it strayed towards the spot where he had put his hand on her chest, over her heart. It wasn't logic that made her decide. The sight of him, lying in the hospital bed, strengthened her resolve, and she quickly walked back up to him and grabbed hold of his hand.

"So am I."
