Nanao breathed a deep sigh as she took in the morning air. She could still hear her husband snoring in the room behind her. After marrying Shunsui, she quickly discovered that he was a deep and loud sleeper. When they were still just captain and lieutenant, she never caught him snoring (more than once) during his frequent naps. But that was over 15 years ago. How quickly time goes by she thought to herself.

She turned around to go back inside when "OMMF" she gasped out loud as something collided with her stomach. Her scowl turned to a soft smile when she saw who it was. "HA! I got you mommy, were you surprised?!" came a voice that Nanao thought was way too loud for this time of day. Standing before her with an impish grin (not unlike her father's) was a small girl who appeared to be about 10 years old with Shunsui's brown hair and eyes. The girl giggled, shaking her boyishly short hair.

Nanao opened her mouth to chastise the young girl about how it wasn't polite to head-butt people in the stomach when a sleep filled voice said "Yare, yare Satomi-chan, you shouldn't hit people unawares, not to mention have so much energy this early in the morning." Satomi smiled as she leaned into her father with a muffled "Sorry mommy." Nanao just shook her head with a smile the let her daughter know that it was okay.

"Come ON daddy, they'll be here any minute." Whined Satomi as her father tightened the sash on her mini-shihakusho. "You should learn to have more patience like your mother" said Shunsui as her finished. No sooner had the words left his mouth than a loud crash was heard as non-other than the 11th squad captain with his lieutenant on his shoulder came tumbling through the garden wall of the 8th division. As Kenpachi came to a halt he looked over to where the family was gathered and said "Come kid lets go, if we don't get a move on all the strong ones will be gone."

"YAY! A day of fun with Mi-chan while Ken-chan goes off to fight bad guys!" shouted from her place on Kenpachi's shoulder. Nanao cast a worried look at her daughter who was being lifted by Kenpachi onto his free shoulder. "Just be careful okay, there's so much danger in Rukongai." "Relax, we're not even going into the further districts, besides, she has Yachiru with her." said Kenpachi. With a wave of goodbye from Satomi, they were off. After arriving at the designated forest an hour late (Yachiru was giving directions) the two girls hopped off Kenpachi's shoulder and began exploring the woods, promising not to stray too far. They settled for playing near a creek while Kenpachi stalked off to dispatch of the hollow and vagabonds in the area.

Standing on a tall rock Satomi spied someone moving away from them at a distance. He was a captain-level shingami who she'd seen at some of her father's boring meetings. She asked Yachiru abut him. "Oh that just Mayurin, he's weird." Yachiru said. "What his real name and what makes him so weird Chiru-chan?" asked Satomi. "Nicknames are better but Mayuri Kurosutchi and he's into all that boring sciency stuff….Hey! Kinda like you!" exclaimed Yachiru with an overdramatic wave of her hand.

Satomi looked down while scratching her head sheepishly. It wasn't her fault she found every science related book in the library interesting! "Anyway he's going away so let's go back to playing!" yelled Yachiru as she jumped in to creek. Satomi used that as a distraction to sneak away. She wanted to meet the strange shingami captain. She was curious; after all, he was one of the people her parents had told her to avoid.
