The Memory of Us
The moment they first shared a kiss was under the rain.
It was a cliché scene but it was real. He had tried to reach her and return the book she had left behind at the café when suddenly, she turned around at the same time, probably realizing her book was missing, and the two met lip to lip. It felt odd at first, since it was the first time they had actually kissed each other. So, as they parted under the rain, they both touched their burning lips.
Different, they both thought to themselves as they entered their homes.
--
When they held hands for the first time, it was the beginning of winter.
After the unexpected kiss a few weeks ago, the two had stumbled upon each other unexpectedly on the streets. Walking beside one another, the snowflakes were falling rather abundantly. As people all around them grouped together for warmth, the two found themselves pressed against each other, hands making contact. And yet, he pulled her hand back into his own when she shyly tried to let go. The warmth together they both produced was overwhelming and they continued to hold hands together until their paths parted.
--
However when they shared a kiss a second time, it meant trouble.
It was during a birthday party and alcoholic beverages were distributed. Being the non-drinker, she had declined his offer. But he was too persistent and urged her to have a sip at least. They were alone in a room and when she took her sip and he took his gulp of the drink, the two clung to one another like glue and paper. Falling onto a soft surface, they engaged in the forbidden.
No regrets, they thought to themselves as they awoke the next morning in each other's arms.
--
When he passed away due to cancer, she still continues to silently ponder about their love.
Fifty years of marriage they have shared together. Obstacles good and bad have come and sprouted by, but as each and every day passes, they become memories. She sits and watches her grandchildren play with each other. Some who look just like her and others look just like him. Their children greet her with love and warmth and she never forgets that he and her created them. She never forgets to tell each and every children and grandchildren the lineage of their birth.
I love you, is what she remembers as his last and remaining words.
She looks out the window and sees winter.
