Better by Tomorrow

Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Back then, we believed that to be the world's one and only truth.

I'll feel better by tomorrow boys

She waves us off as she tries to stop coughing

Bending over the kitchen counter she had previously cleaned

We uneasily accepted this for the truth and continued playing

I'll feel better by tomorrow boys

That's what she said with a smile as we knelt beside her bed

This had been happening more and more frequently

But we took no notice

I'll feel better by tomorrow boys

Her last words to us going round my head

We stand at her funeral, alone in the world

After we had found her body amongst a bed of food shopping

How could we have taken no notice?

You'll feel better by tomorrow boys

What the few people who came to her funeral said

All the while muttering about how we would cope, being so young

We took no notice

"Come on Al. We're gonna bring Mom back."

Everything'll feel better by tomorrow brother

That's what you said to me

Before we committed the ultimate sin

I took no notice

"Mom...? Is that you?" I could barely speak, there was so much pain... where was I? "NO! It wasn't supposed to turn out this way! Al! Alphonse? He's my brother, Dammit! Give him back! He's the only thing I have left!"

I'll feel better by tomorrow

I call out to you as I'm brought to the bed for the operation

I don't make a sound, though most men would be screaming

I take no notice

You'll feel better by tomorrow

My Commanding Officer told me

As I sobbed over bloody remains of the little girl I couldn't save

He took no notice

We're not gods. We're humans. Tiny, insignificant humans...who couldn't even save a little girl.

You'll feel better soon

My so called half brother cackled as his blade shot forward

Steel met flesh and my black shirt darkened with blood

I took no notice

You'll feel better soon

You said as you committed the sin again

Blue light flashed as you took my place

You took no notice

We'll feel better soon

I whispered as I made the sacrifice

I knew you'd be mad at me afterwards

I took no notice

Now we are separated for the first time

And I hope that your memories of me return

I will find a way to return to you
