A Yule Ball-related FanFic by Ghessica

Chapter 1 – The Announcement

The bell was due to ring any moment, the whole class has already copied their homework to be passed on Monday. Emily was just putting her things to her bag when Professor McGonagall spoke. "Your attention please. Christmas is already coming, and I want you to know that we will be having a Yule Ball this year. The ball is open to fourth years and above but you may invite a younger student if you want to. You will be needing partners for the ball and dress robes will be worn."

Some of the girls giggled. Emily knew they just want the Yule Ball to have handsome boys as partners. The bell rang and the students rushed outside and went to the Great Hall for lunch. Some of the girls giggled every time boys passed them and were talking in hushed voices.

"D'you think he'll ask me to the ball?"

"I don't know. What color is your dress robes anyway?"

"Red. Oh I hope he'll ask me to go with him…."

'Sheesh. These girls need some time-out.' Emily thought as she entered the Great Hall. She really didn't like these kind of parties. 'It's only for cool people. Unlike me.' The only time that these thoughts were blown away from her head is when she saw her friends, Ecka and Samantha, waving at her. She hurried to the Gryffindor Table feeling extremely hungry.

"Where were you?" Samantha said as Emily sat down next to her.

"Er, long story." Emily said through a mouthful of potato.

"Really? Hey girls d'you know who do you want to be your partner?" Samantha asked.

"Oh I hope Harry will ask me to go with him." Ecka replied, gazing dreamingly into space. She had a big crush on Harry since their first day at Hogwarts.

"How about you Ems? Who do you want to go with?"

"Me? I dunno. Anyone."

"Anyone? You won't mind if Crabbe or Goyle will ask you out?" said Samantha jokingly

"No way! Actually, I don't want to go."

"Why?!"

"Nothing. I just don't want to."

The post owls arrived. Bringing Emily her daily subscription of the Daily Prophet. There's nothing new except the Holyhead Harpies had managed to get into the finals.

"Anything new?" Samantha asked.

"Nah nothing." Emily replied. She went on reading the Prophet until the bell rang.

"C'mon it's time for Divination!" Ecka said, pulling Emily and Samantha into their feet. Then dragging the two of them upstairs.

"Ecka what was that for?!" Emily panted by the time they arrived at Professor Trelawney's room.

"I just want to sit near Harry. So I'll know the girl he'll ask to the ball. Oh I hope it was me."

Emily rolled her eyes and said "You dragged us to this room for that? Geez I thought you don't want to be late."

"Be quiet, here he comes!" Ecka whispered excitedly to the other two as Harry and Ron sat on the chairs near them.
