George stood looking down from the walls of Pirate's Swoop. In his hand he held a letter with the Kings seal on it. Against the cliffs below the waves threw themselves, the wind screaming, as though in agony.
She had finally met a better warrior. Or, perhaps she had been tired…tired of fighting, tired of being strong…
However it had happened, Alanna was gone.
~Here I am I'm
right here
O I wish you could feel me standing so close
I'm right beside you dear~
The paper was torn from George's grasp, snapping loud in the wind, and carried away. The proud man turned from the sea, his feet heavy, eyes dry and staring. He walked through the castle they had lived in, their home. He sat in a chair in his study, the fire burning brightly, the flames beautiful, compelling and wild. He didn't see them. He didn't see anything.
~I fly round this old man house
I float through our walls
I scream and I call
while I watch you without me~
Tears, like crystals, burned furrows down his cheeks, fell to the floor where they shattered into thousands of fragments. Night fell and the gale outside grew frenzied, the only light in the study the dying embers of George's fire, glowing feebly. Body slumped, face glistening, he waited.
~All I feel all I am now
is this love I have for you
Each night its you, you I lay beside~
He lay on the wide bed, the cold, acutely aware of the empty place beside him, inside him. Staring at the untouched pillow, imagining her face there, smiling sadly at him.
~I close my eyes never to sleep
I tell you all the things I should have said
that you'll never know
How could I act such a part
as to love the one who breaks my heart
I had to go...~
Awaking, not realising he had fallen asleep, he stood and
wandered through their rooms. Here, they had danced, learning they were going
to have a family. Learning their were more levels of love than either of them
had imagined.
~So put your hands here round my waist
Though you cannot feel my touch dear
and dance with me as you did before
I'm bound forever to this house
I can never go beyond that door
I dance alone~
Years had past, grey shot through George's hair. Tired, he
looked into the fiery depths burning brightly before him, the rain coming down
heavily, mourning still, the wind screaming
its own greif, still unspent. Memories of the time they had together
made his lips curl in a smile. It had been a night like this when he had first
heard…
~So when you think of me smile
it's the only way that I can see
that you still care for me~
Shuffling into the bedroom, back bent and bones aching,
twisted by years that had slowly added up, he lay on the same bed, watched the
same pillow, and fell asleep to see her floating before him.
~Close my eyes never to sleep
I tell you all the things I've should have said
that you'll never know
How could I act such a part
as to love the one who breaks my heart
I had to go...~
Gripping the cold stone beneath gnarled hands, he watched the vibrant sunset, the orange the same color as Alanna's hair, fade, until it was all black. "I'm coming." His voice was scratchy, loving, watching the sea, waiting.
~Here I am I'm right here
How I wish you could see me dear
O my dear...~
