"Can't sleep?" Galinda said, sitting down next to Elphaba.

"It seems I've neglected to pack any reading material."

"... How is that possible?" Elphaba just shrugged.

"I..." Galinda began, "I'm sorry about Miss Pfannee's prank, Elphie."

"And I'm sorry my existence causes such problems for you, Miss Galinda." Elphaba replied in a quiet voice.

Galinda winced. "You must know I didn't mean it. It's just... I'm expected to behave a certain way here... It's ridiculous, and I'm sorry. I truly am, Elphie."

Elphaba didn't say anything for awhile. Then, in almost a whisper, "I don't know what I was thinking. Of course you wouldn't ask me to come here with your friends. So stupid..."

Galinda grasped Elphaba's hand and held firm. "You're my friend, Elphie. They're... obligation. Meaningless upper class networking. None of it's real."

"And a secret relationship with someone you publicly denounce is?"

Galinda caught the tear with her thumb before it could slide down Elphaba's cheek. She leaned in and placed a soft kiss on green lips. "You know it is, sweetheart. And it won't be a secret forever, we've talked about all this. Won't you hold out awhile longer, for me? For us?"

Elphaba closed her eyes and leaned her forehead against Galinda's. "What else could I do?"
