Author's note: I got the idea for this at a school carnival. There will be one in a later chapter.

hope you like it!

Scotty Smalls woke up to hear the sound of a distant train whistle. The boy just lay in his bed staring at the white ceiling. He was breathing faster than he was a few moments ago, for he had been sleeping. He rolled over and got tired just from doing that. Those were the first few minutes of Scotty's summer.

Over the years, Scotty's mattress had gotten worn down and nearly became trash every week. As he sat up, the bed creaked. Just when Scott almost went back to sleep, cries came from the blue baby monitor.

His eleven month old brother, Johnnie was up. Scotty groaned knowing he had to get up.

The thirteen year old came out of his room, his sock covered feet walking on the cold hardwood floor. His little brother's room was at the other end of the hall; next to their parent's room. Scotty shook his head to have his Irish hair get poofy. He'd have to gel it before he went out.

The kid finally made it to a yellow room. Sitting up in his crib, Johnnie was motioning for Scotty to take him out. Which he did.

"It's okay Johnnie boy," Scotty stressed the words as he carefully rocked the baby. He put his brother in his left arm and on his hip, while with the free hand getting Johnnie's Glo-Worm doll.

"Hey, Johnnie boy…You're going to Cecelia's house today…" Johnnie soon went limp in Scotty's arms, and then he put the baby in the crib.

Cecelia Roberts was Scotty's neighbor. They were roughly the same age; maybe a few months apart. He moved in with his family, next to her about a year before. Cecelia and Scotty were in the same school. And since it was let out every Thursday she watched Johnnie. Scotty was unsure at first. Mainly because she had offered to do it. And, when he'd have to drop Johnnie off, like all girls Cecelia would want to talk. Is there much you can talk about with a girl and a baby in the same environment?

Scotty groggily went down stairs. At the kitchen table, his step-dad was reading the newspaper and finishing a glass of milk. Bill was already dressed in his work clothes, most likely about to leave. Scotty sat next to Bill who was getting up; he usually never says a word in the morning.

So, Smalls remained seated like a bump on a log, doing much of nothing. He stared out the dining room window, to see his neighbors coming outside. The sun had just about came up. The old Mr. Woodell had begun to mow his lawn, like always. The Hunter siblings were riding their trikes down the street, like always. And Mrs. Kathleen Roberts was tending to her garden, like always.

But what he heard next was very out of the ordinary.

Accompanied by the radio, a woman began to sing Gee by The Crows. It was his mother Anne. She was a kind woman, who-since last summer-aloud Scotty to bend the rules a little. Scotty had gotten his looks from her; his personality came from his dead father. Anne slowly came down the stairs with Johnnie in her arms.

"Baseball with the guys today?" She asked as she got a bottle ready for the baby. "And every other day." Scotty and 8 of his friends always play baseball. ALWAYS! Yeah…

"Oh, I forgot," Anne began, "Cecelia stopped by yesterday. She said something about the carnival coming to town." The room got quiet except for Johnnie giggling at dust in the air, "She's a pretty girl." Anne threw in as if Scotty had never noticed. Cecelia wasn't the best looking gal around but, she wasn't completely unfortunate looking.

"Well I'll ask her when I go drop off Johnnie."

Scotty knew he would and not have trouble forgetting.
