Neville Longbottom wandered aimlessly through the empty Gryffindor common room, wondering why he was there. It had only been a few months ago when he had begged his grandmother to let him go back to school, and now he was wishing he hadn't.
It had seemed like a good enough idea at the time; he would finish out his school career and then join the fight against Voldemort. Now he was wondering why he had been so stupid. It was now obvious that Dumbledore's death had affected the professors so much they hardly tried to teach. Not to mention that most of the school was gone and the few students left were crammed in the Gryffindor house.
Of course all the Slytherins were gone. Their parents had pulled them as soon as Dumbledore died to, Neville assumed, become Death Eaters. Almost all of the Hufflepuffs were gone, leaving only Hannah Abbot and Susan Bones, who like Neville, had insisted on staying. A little fewer than half the Ravenclaw house remained and nearly all the Gryffindors were gone, off the fight the war.
Neville sighed and made his way to the window seat, watching the snow swirl lazily down to the earth, seeming so innocent and out of place in the war torn country. He was suddenly angry with himself. When all of his friends were out, risking their lives, he was sitting here beside a warm fire, feeling sorry for himself. He let his head drop to his knees and stayed that way for what could have been minutes or hours, he did not know, until he felt a tap on his shoulder.
He lifted his head and found a girl with long blonde hair a large, round eyes standing behind him. She was Luna Lovegood, the girl that he had had feelings for for a few years now.
A strange sensation swept over him as he looked at her, something between relief that she was there and embarrassment that she had seen him when he was so vulnerable.
"Hello," she said, but not in her usual dreamy voice, but in one that was thick with sorrow.
Neville smiled weakly and patted the seat next to him. Luna sat and, much to Neville's surprise, took his hands in hers.
They sat like that until they both dosed off, still holding hands.
Neville's eyes slowly fluttered open. It took him a moment before he realized where he was and why his neck was aching so badly. From the look of the fresh sunlight glinting off of the snow, it was just after sunrise.
He noticed that he was still holding hands with Luna, who was still asleep. Not wanted to wake her, he spent the next hour watching the snow melt under the warming sun and watching Luna sleep.
After a while he heard her murmur something. Not being able to make out what she said, he softly said "Huh?"
"I love you," she repeated so quietly Neville would have thought she was talking in her sleep if not for the slight squeeze of her hand accompanied with it.
Neville was shocked, but happier than he had been in months and, as Luna opened her large eyes partially, kissed her gently on the cheek. She smiled vaguely and closed her eyes again, dosing off.
Neville brushed his hand across her check once more before falling back asleep himself, the sun warming his face.
A/N: I really like Neville/Luna so that's why I wrote this. I don't think I'm as good as writing the future as I am the past, so please don't flame me.
