The Library
Chapter 1: A Chance Encounter
A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first story on fan , and I hope you like it!
Disclaimer: I don't own anything in this story except for the plot line and a few of the characters- It belongs the one and only Uncle Rick!!
Annabeth's POV:
I sighed in relief as I marked the last item off my to-do list. Finally. Now I could go to the library, which was only a few blocks away from my house.
I had recently shifted to the big apple, where I went to Goode High School for education.
I packed my school bag according to the time table tomorrow, and after leaving a note for my father saying that I'll be in the local library, I headed to my favourite place in the neighbourhood.
Normally, I would've gone to my best friend Thalia's house, but I knew that she had to finish a lot of assignments. I had offered to help, but she had waved it off, saying that she needs to develop good habits anyways.
As I walked down the streets, I thought about which book I was going to issue this time. This required serious thinking, and at the end, I decided on Looking for Alaska by John Green, and Allegiant from the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth. Other than that, I had absolutely no idea about what I should take, so I thought that I'd just go there, have a good look and pick whichever book I liked best. That's what I do, mostly.
As soon as I entered the large room full of books, I was hit with the most comforting fragrance ever: books- old and new- along with coffee and a slight hint of tea. Perfect.
I smiled at the librarian. She wasn't like the typical, old and cranky librarian. She was really sweet, and she even lets me slip an extra book or two occasionally.
"Back so soon?" She inquired.
"Yeah, I didn't have much to do anyways, and I had finished all my other books." I replied.
"So what books are you gonna take today, Annabeth?" Asked Athena (that's her name).
"I have only decided on two- Allegiant and Looking for Alaska." I said.
"Great choice!" Athena commented, and after showing me where they were kept, she returned to her post.
I took the two books I had decided on, earlier, and apart from that I also took a book on architecture and An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. I had to take one more book, so I made up my mind and went towards the section where I could find a book on marine photography.
I wandered around, taking a good look at the books. I hadn't realised I had reached the section where I was headed until I bumped into someone, who was also staring at the books in wonder, apparently.
I murmured an apology which was probably incoherent to the person. I looked up as he muttered a few sorries himself...and was he... Blushing? He was already looking at me, and something told me he had been staring at me.This boy had jet black hair and gorgeous sea green eyes, which met mine for a second, giving me a wave of... Giddiness?
Whoa, Annabeth, what the hell was that?
I looked up again, and realised who this was. I almost had a heart attack when I did (I know I'm over exaggerating, but... Oh, well).
"Breaking news! Percy Jackson in the library! Did he get a severe blow to the head or something?" I shout-whispered.
"Annabeth Chase?" The expression on Percy's face was one of shock.
Percy Jackson. The supposedly 'Bad Boy' of our school. That's why I was astonished to see him at the library- he bunked classes, and hung out with the people who smoke and drank. So I assume that he did so, too. I never really got involved in their drama, and I had nothing to do with them...mostly. Percy was also Thalia and one of my other friend's- Nico's- cousin.
"So which books have you taken... And which book were you gonna take?" He asked me. This day was full of surprises.
I thought that since he hadn't been very mean to me, I had no reason to be rude either. In fact, he was almost... Kind to me. So I answered him in a neutral tone. Then I asked him the same thing, and he told me that he hadn't decided yet, but he was looking for something on marine life.
"I didn't know that you like to read books." I stated.
"Yeah... I mean it was for an assignment..." He replied bash fully.
"Marine life isn't in our syllabus, as far as I remember." I said.
Percy turned a deep shade of red, mumbling, "I... Kinda... I actually like to read, only the stuff that interests me, though."
"Oh?! Who knew; you definitely don't show it in school."
I was about to say something, but his phone started vibrating, and after checking it, he said his mom was calling, and he had to rush. He quickly picked up a book (it seemed that he had his sights on it for quite some time).
"So... I'll see you in school tomorrow?" He spoke with a smile.
I was a little taken aback by his sudden behaviour, but I returned his grin and said "Sure."
Percy's POV:
"Percy, dear, I'm going grocery shopping. Is there anywhere you want to go which comes in the route?" My mom called out.
I pondered over this, then replied to her, "Yeah, just give me a sec... I have to wear my jacket." And I had to try and take my hair a little bit, but I knew it was pointless; I'll never be able to make my hair less messy. I grabbed my black jacket and went of with my mom.
~o.O.o~
I was in the library, greeting the librarian. I was glad the old, grouchy librarian retired; she hated me- specially my hair. She thought I didn't respect books and all. That's not true. I completely admired books, even though I may not show it in school... That's a whole other story.
I went over to the section where I could find something about marine life. The seas and oceans had always fascinated me, and I loved to swim- I was also the captain of our school's swimming team.
I looked around, glancing at the book titles and trying to decide which book I should take when I crashed into someone who was seemingly just as enchanted with the books as I was. I looked up, and my breath was taken away. She looked all too familiar. I just knew I had seen those princess-like golden curls, and her slim, athletic, graceful figure. And her eyes. Oh my gods, her eyes. They were a startling, stormy grey, looking like they were at different places at once, a million thoughts running here and there at the same time. She was absolutely alluring.
The girl mumbled a few sorries, and I did so too, not taking my eyes off her- I couldn't, even if I wanted to. She looked up, and it hit me that I was staring. I think I even blushed a bit!
"Breaking news! Percy Jackson in the library! Did he get a severe blow to the head or something?" She shout whispered in a sweet voice. That's sounded strange.
That's when I realised I was talking to Annabeth Chase.
"Annabeth Chase?" I wanted to confirm.
Annabeth Chase. She was the girl who was super smart (straight A's), and read when she was done with her work. I had quite a lot of classes with her: math, history, English and gym. Ok well maybe it's not that much, but it was good enough. I hadn't really noticed her before- I mean sure, I knew Annabeth, the smart girl in some of my classes but I never looked at her. Like really looked at her. She sat right at the front, and I sat all the way back. Not by choice. I was obliged to. But as I said, that another story.
"So which books have you taken... And which one were you gonna take?" I asked, surprising both of us. At least I didn't say anything stupid.
She told me she had taken Allegiant by Veronica Roth, 2 John Green books- An Abundance of Katherines and Looking for Alaska- and lastly, a book on architecture. She said she had been looking for a book on marine photography. I cursed myself for not knowing where it could be found. She asked me the same thing, and I replied, saying I hadn't decided yet, but was looking for something related to marine life.
"I didn't know that you liked to read books." She said in a kind of sceptical tone.
Then, in a very idiotic way, I stuttered something about it being for an assignment. Why? I mean, I just had to protect my "image".
Apparently, she heard me, and stated that she was pretty sure marine life wasn't in our syllabus, making me turn red, probably like a tomato.
"I... Kinda... I actually like to read, only the stuff that I like, though." I replied.
"Oh! Who knew; you definitely don't show it in school!" She appeared to be shocked. Then it looked like Annabeth was about to say something, but right then my amazing phone started vibrating. It was my mom. I sighed and reluctantly told her I had to go before leaving, asking her if I would see her in school tomorrow. I gave her a smile, which she returned with a 'sure'.
I picked up a particular book which I had seen a few moments ago, and it seemed to be nice, so I took I t and left.
I was grinning like an idiot the whole way back to my house (my mom had left for some work, so she told me to go home soon- she was overprotective, but I absolutely loved her). That's when it struck me like lightning. Did I like her? And as I replayed the short conversation, I found that I hadn't denied liking her. Not once. But I was still slightly confused about my feelings for her
Annabeth's POV:
I was thinking about Percy most of the time he was completely different from the Percy I knew from school. The school one was bad, and I didn't really like him. In fact I resented him. But the Percy in the library... I liked him. Wait... No. Yeah. I liked that Percy. Not like like. Just like. As a friend. I mean I would like to have him as a friend. Oh great. Now I was rambling in my mind, as if doing that in front of my family and friends wasn't enough. That too about a boy who appeared to be bad but was actually pretty sweet and kind.
I sighed.
What the dickens was wrong with me?
So that was my first chapter, and I hope you guys enjoyed it! I know that Percabeth is going a bit fast for some yours' taste, but it will definitely get better!
Feel free to give me feedback regarding this, and I will surely work on it!
Don't forget to review!
