"Today is the day." Courfeyrac said to himself in the mirror as he straightened the bow tie which hugged his neck. "Today, I'll be a father."
The young lawyer had been waiting for this day for three years. That night at the barricade, he held his pride and joy in his arms while he told him everything would be alright. The boy he held pleaded the young man to stay with him forever. He was a street urchin, yes, but he loved the man that looked out for him.
This week was in fact an event-packed week. Marius and Cosette Pontmercy announced the expectation of a child. This was, of course, a happy surprise to everyone. Enjolras proposed to the love of his life, Eponine Thenardier. This surprised everyone even more. The marble had been cracked, and love seeped through the crevices.
Courfeyrac was in an exceptionally good mood. He hummed a song to himself while he tried to tame the brown curls on his head with a comb. After realizing it would not work, he headed downstairs. Eponine and Enjolras were preparing the young boy, Gavroche, for the big day. Courfeyrac grinned happily when he saw his soon-to-be son having his hair combed by his older sister.
"How's my boy?" He said, leaning against the wall.
The twelve year old grinned a cheeky grin, and his blue eyes glowed. "I'm a bit alright." He said.
Eponine finished combing the boy's hair. The ex-street urchin was finely dressed in a blue jacket and trousers. He would've matched Courfeyrac if his jacket had been blue.
"What a handsome devil you are." Courfeyrac said as he walked closer to the boy.
"I know, I know." Gavroche joked.
Courfeyrac knelt down so that he was eye to eye with the boy. "Are you ready?" He asked.
"As ready as I'll ever be." He answered.
The young man took his hand, and they walked out the door where a carriage was waiting. It took a little while to reach the destination. Soon, they arrived at a building where very few people went into these days.
Gavroche held Courfeyrac's hand tightly as they walked inside the building. There was a woman at the front who directed them through many different hallways. She finally let them into a room where a man with glasses was filling in paperwork.
"Your ten o'clock is here." The woman said.
The man looked up and smiled ever so slightly. "Welcome, monseiurs!" He said.
Courfeyrac and Gavroche stepped into the room, still clinging onto each other's hands.
"Now, this won't take very long." The man said, pulling out some papers.
The man slid the papers across the table with a pen on top of them. Courfeyrac began to fill out the paperwork, and lastly handed the pen to Gavroche for him to sign his name at the bottom of one sheet. Then he slid the papers back to the man, where he wrote on some of the fields before taking a stamp and pounding it against the sheets. He handed one sheet to Courfeyrac.
"It's all settled. Thank you for your time." He said.
"Thank you." Courfeyrac replied. "God bless."
"Thank you." Gavroche said to the man.
The new family arrived home soon. Everyone was there to celebrate: Marius, Cosette, Eponine, Enjolras, Combeferre, Joly, Jehan, Grantaire, and the rest of the Amis. Courfeyrac was a proud father now. He had his little Gavroche to take care of.
When the partying was done, and everyone had gone home, Courfeyrac took Gavroche outside on the balcony of their apartment. They both pointed out constellations and planets that had recently been discovered. It had been an exciting day for both boys. Soon, Gavroche began to yawn constantly from drowsiness.
"Tired there, my boy?" Courfeyrac questioned with a slight smile on his face.
Gavroche nodded and tucked his head into Courfeyrac's neck. "I love you, Papa…" He yawned as sleep overtook his mind.
"I love you, Gavroche." He replied, rubbing the child's back soothingly.
