Fairy Tales

You're standing in the Burrow, gazing out the window at your cousin, Lily. It's ironic -isn't it?- that she's the one to take him from you. Because in all honesty, you expected to lose to beautiful perfect Victoire and to pretty smart Rose. But daring and rebellious Lily? You watch her dancing and twirling in the rain with Lorcan, your Lorcan. Except he isn't yours anymore, is he, baby girl? He's all hers.
And it's all happened before, hasn't it? Because you gave up Teddy to Victoire and Scorpius to Rose and now Lorcan to Lily. But you're Lucy Weasley and you don't stand in the way of fairytales. That's Lily or Dom's job, not yours. So you stand by and watch and feel your heart break just a little bit more with every look and every kiss that isn't yours.
You're too wrapped up in your dissolving dreams to notice when Lysander appears beside you. He startles you when he places a hand on your shoulder. "It'll be okay, Luce. I understand," he murmurs softly. And you take a second to think that maybe your best friend does understand. Because while you were busy loving Teddy and Scorp and Lorcan, he was loving Victoire and Rose and Lily, wasn't he? So you grin at him and nod resolutely. There's nothing to be done because Lily and Lorcan are the stuff of fairy tales.
Lysander joins you in watching them slow dance in the rain. He rubs soothing circles on your arm and you feel the pain begin to drift away. You've loved many boys—three to be exact—but Ly's the one that's always been there for you. He's listened to you chatter about your infatuations; he's held you as you cried; he's wiped away your tears. Your brain – or maybe that's Rose's voice drilled into your head—tells you that maybe he's all you need. And yeah, Lysander Scamander isn't suave or handsome or mysterious. But he's cute and charming and sympathetic and your best friend and it worked out okay for Aunt Hermione and Uncle Ron, didn't it?
Maybe you're not meant for fairytales. But maybe that's okay. All you've got are broken dreams and the love of Lysander Scamander, but maybe for you, that's enough.
