I really couldn't think of a title for this. :/ So I improvised.
He observed the two silently, not uttering a word. He didn't have anything to say. He didn't trust himself to open his mouth. He thought he might scream if he did, or go over to them and tell them exactly what he thought the situation should be.
But Shiki and Beat? She deserved so much better than him! They didn't go together in the slightest! He was an idiot, he said stuff like 'imprecious' when he meant 'impressive'. How could Shiki like someone like that?
Neku frowned and walked away, not able to watch them interact any longer. They were only talking and holding hands in Mexican Dog together (Beat was doing a very good job of eating an extraordinary amount of food one-handed), but even that was way too much.
Sitting down on a bench outside Molco, he took out his phone and flicked through the photos he had on it. One of them was of him and Shiki, just after they'd been brought back to life. He didn't look at this picture too much anymore. It was too painful.
A week after this she'd confessed her feelings to him, nervous but very clear about what she wanted to say.
And he... he'd just turned her away... He hadn't really wanted to. Part of him was just so happy, part of him was cautious and thought she was just mocking him, because that was how Neku's mind worked. He was wary nearly to the point of paranoia when it came to forming relationships, and he decided that she probably wasn't serious and he didn't want to make a fool of himself, so he turned her down. Of course, when she got so upset and ran away nearly in tears, he realised that, hey, maybe she wasn't joking.
He felt guilty, but he figured he could apologise later. Maybe.
Of course, it took him a while to get round to apologising, and it was difficult because Shiki was trying to avoid him as much as possible, understandably. But the day he wanted to explain himself and apologise? That was the day Shiki and Beat announced that they were seeing each other, and Neku's plans went out the window.
He didn't see Shiki that much these days, and when he did she was almost always with Beat.
He didn't want to admit that it was his fault, so he didn't. He pinned the blame on Beat and told himself that Shiki just had no taste. It was everyone's fault but his.
In his opinion, she deserved much better than Beat. She was too smart to be with someone who could barely speak his own language!
Of course, his idea of 'much better than Beat' was him. He knew that she wasn't likely to forgive him - although he hadn't intended, to he had been rather ruthless and cruel when rejecting her.
And now he was cold, distant and condescending when he was around her. He knew he wasn't making things any better, but he didn't know what else to do.
Dammit! Why did he have to be so stupid?
Why did Shiki have to resort to Beat of all people?
Why did any of this have to happen?
Neku growled under his breath, attracting the attention of a nearby girl and making her scurry away looking scared.
He supposed all he could do was wait it out until he had the guts to speak to her properly again. The least he could do was apologise...
But then again, that wasn't really his style. He had no idea what to say to make things alright between them again. He shook his head and stood up. Maybe walking around a bit would help clear his mind a little...
He allowed the Shibuya crowds to sweep him away, all the while cursing himself for being such a coward.
No one is allowed to say it should be longer (*cough*LegendaerieLT*cough*). ¬_¬ However everyone should review! I'm not fond of the fact that I wrote this, but never mind.
