I watched as Katniss climbed up the ladder to safety, or somewhere safer then down here. I turned around and watched the reptilian mutts slither closer and closer, I looked back at the ladder. There was no way I would make it in time. I sighed, thinking of Anne and our unborn child, at least he will know his father died for a noble cause. Anne, just the thought of her sent a jolt of pain and guilt through his heart, how will she be able to take care of herself and their child all alone? No, she is not alone, Haymitch would take care of her, he promised he would.

The closeness of the mutts hissing brought me back to a painful reality. If I'm going to die, I thought, I'm not going to go down without a fight. I loaded my gun and sprayed gunfire at the slowly approaching mutts. It wasn't long before I ran out of ammo and had to switch to my trident. The mutts quickly over whelmed me and knocked me to the floor. Then there was only darkness.

I silently ran across the forest floor trying to make it back to our meeting place. All of a sudden a net was over me and I couldn't get out no matter how hard I struggled. I scream, then I hear someone approaching, "Katniss! Katniss!" I shout.

"Rue!" I hear her scream back. The footsteps are coming closer, from the opposite side of where Katniss' scream came from. I see Katniss break in to the clearing and am about to warn her of the other person when a burst of pain comes from my stomach, I look down and see a spear sticking out of my body.

"Are there more? Are there more?" I hear Katniss say. I try to respond but I can barely get the word out.

"No," I finally manage. She kneels down next to me and cuts me out of the net. "You blew up the food?"

"Every last bit," she says

"You have to win," I can feel the strength leaving me, I can't hold on much longer.

"I'm going to. Going to win for both of us now." A cannon sounds it must be the boy who speared me.

"Don't go," I whisper, tightening my grip on her hand.

"Course not." She says putting my head in her lap and stroking my head. Close my eyes and feel almost, well, safe, which is, of course, absurd considering I'm dying. But I feel almost as if I'm at home in my mother's lap slowly falling asleep.

"Sing," is say think of my mother and how she would sing us to sleep every night.

"Deep in the meadow, under the willow

A bed of grass, a soft green pillow

Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes

And when again they open, the sun will rise.

Here it's safe and here it's warm

Here the daisies guard you from every harm

Here your dreams are sweat and tomorrow brings them true

Here is the place where I love you.

My eyes flutter closed and the rest of Katniss' song started to fade. And the darkness over came me.
