Miranda Foster just stood there. Stood there contemplating life. "I promised Mark and Sue that I'd take care of him and look what happened," she thought "I'm a failure as a doctor." Just then Andy came up to the roof.
"We don't control anything," he said.
Miranda sniffed not even realizing she was crying until then, "That is so. Not what my father believed. He said it was our job to be the best at what we do. And to never give up. And to do the one thing nobody else could do 'cause you're their last hope."
"Hey you're missing one piece of the puzzle. You didn't give up on those lungs. You even flew threw a damn hurricane. And thanks to you, Anton Weathers and three other people are going to live," said Andy placing his hands on Miranda's shoulders, "Let's take those wins and go home." Andy left as Miranda wiped away her tears. She walked back inside to gather her things and head home.
God why was she so gung ho on saving Mark Wilson? More so than any of her other patients? Why on Mark had she broken the cardinal rule of never getting emotionally attached to patients? "I guess. I guess because he was kind of like my Dad," she thought. Miranda continued to gather her things thinking about her deceased father. No, she didn't have the best relationship with him. No, she hadn't really forgiven him for everything he had put her, her mother, and her siblings through. But yes, she still respected him. And yes, she still missed him. And yes, she still loved him. He was her father after all.
She still remembered running into his arms when he came home from work when she was little. She still remembered watching the Eagles games with him on Sundays. She still remembered saying she wanted to be a doctor just like Daddy. "Not exactly like Daddy anymore," she thought. Then the worse feelings came. The feelings of heartbreak he gave her. The feeling she had when her older sister, Tabitha, said Dad was gone for good. The feeling of not seeing him for two years and coming to Three Rivers to find out he passed away without so much as a "goodbye" and "I love you." And finding out your boss was sleeping with him and that's why he wasn't with your freakin mother!
She wanted to make things right again. But she no longer had the chance. He would never see her become an attending surgeon. Never walk her down the aisle on her wedding day. Never see her babies. And never grow old with her mother. He was gone.
Before Miranda finished gathering her things, she pulled one thing out of the back of her locker. No one knew she had it in there. Not even Andy or David. Or Dr. Jordan. It was taken when she was twelve, right before her father left for good. The family Christmas card with her parents, herself, Tabitha, and her brother, Willie. Miranda stared at it for a few moments before saying, "I love you Dad and I know you're proud of me." With that, she closed her locker and gathered her things to head home for the night.
