To start off, I know that many of you are Twilight fans. Personally I am not. I've never read the books and I've only recently been forced to watch the first two movies... I didn't pay any attention to them at all. I started this story having watch none of the movies. I wrote this for a friend of mine and now, I won't be happy until I finish it. Please understand that characters might not be like they are in the books/movies. I'll try to fix their personalities if it's really far off, but I don't know if they are, you all do. Also I would like to state this now. This is fan-fiction, which makes it AU. The story has been edited. Please read and enjoy.

Disclaimer: I DO NOT own Twilight or any of its evolving it. I DO own Mik and Emma.

Worries

I sighed softly to myself as the water from my shower fell down onto me. I knew that I couldn't stay in the shower for much longer. First off, I had to get ready for school and secondly because the water's temperature was scorching hot. I didn't really care about that second part at the moment though. A knock sounded from the other side of the bathroom door, followed by the voice of my best friend. "Mik you really need to stop doing this. It's not good for your health." I sighed once again as I switched off the water and wrapped a towel around me. Carefully I stepped out of the shower and opened the door.

Emma, my childhood friend, stood there ready to go for the day. Her shoulder length light blond hair with natural brown highlights was slightly messy, but in that windblown kind of way. Her brown eyes were accented by the emerald green eye shadow and black eyeliner that she wore. Her normally white skin was tanned after time in Nevada visiting family. I smiled when I saw what she was dressed in. Her black knee length skirt did nothing to hide the two mismatched knee length socks and bright yellow converse, which all contrasted nicely with her brown blouse.

Emma's eyes filled with worry as I gently pushed past her and stepped into the room of the lodge we were staying in. Two double beds and a small fridge were all that fit into the small room. I turned around and walked backwards towards my bed as I grinned at her. "What, are showers evil now?"

"You know damn well what I mean Mik! It's not healthy to keep jumping from one city to another across the whole continent every few weeks. You've spent your whole time staying in the hotels except for when I dragged you around with my family last month." Emma took a step towards me, but decided to just sit down on her bed instead. "Go get dressed. We start school again today and I am not missing it just because you want to leave town again."

I turned around quickly as my grin slipped from my face. I blinked once before I began to shuffle through my duffle bag in search of the clothes I wanted to wear. This was all that Emma and I had with us when we left. We each carried a duffle bag filled with clothes and then there was a single laptop case for two laptops and a bag of toiletries. It was actually just this past week that we'd gotten messenger bags filled with things for school. It has been nearly a year and a half ago that we had started our trip. I was 16 then. I hadn't asked Emma to come with me, but the morning that I was to leave I found her sitting in front of my house in my car with her stuff with her. Thankfully Emma had stuck with me ever since we were kids, and she still does. At times; well most of the time actually; I fell as though I have dragged her away from her family and any future that she may have had. She was 15 at the time and her parents understood that this was something that she had needed to do. And for that I am thankful to them.

I held back another sigh as I grabbed a pair of black skinny jeans, a dark gray cami and my black hoodie. Taking the clothes into the bathroom, I quickly got dressed. Wiping the mirror with my towel I stared at my reflection for a moment. My alabaster skin made me look sick, and add the black bags forming under my eyes I nearly looked like the walking dead. My amethyst eyes seemed empty of emotion, but if one looked closely they would see sadness and exhaustion. I grabbed my brush and attack the tangles of layered honey brown hair that reached my mid back before throwing it all into a side braid with my long bangs hanging loose. I took a deep breath as I walked out and put on some socks and my black combat boots. "Come on then Emm, let's go. I can't wait all day for you to pig out on Waffle Crisps." I teased my friend as I watched her while she sat on her bed with a box of cereal in her hands.

She looked at my oddly for a minute and then grinned. "Oh you know you wish that you would have thought of this idea sooner." She closed up the box and tossed it onto the foot of her bed before grabbing her bag. Together we walked out into the cold day on the border between La Push and Forks, Washington.

"Not after I've already brushed my teeth. You might not care Emma, but I do."

"Well it's only going to make my breath smell like cereal rather than minty fresh." I locked the door behind Emma and watched as the teen slid down the wooden railing. "One of these days Mik, you'll learn to relax a little." She called up once she reached the bottom.

"I do relax, just not in the same way that you do. How do you always do that without getting splinters in your ass every time?" Emma ignored me and continued walking over to her truck and hopping into the driver's seat. Her truck is a 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 in metallic gray. A birthday gift from her aunt and uncle on turning 17 last month. She started up the engine with a grin as I slowly walked down the stairs. I had much less enthusiasm about returning to school than she did. It's the a little more than ¾ through our junior year and we've been doing independent studies since we left. This would be my first time back in a school building in 3 and a half years.

Just as I was opening the car door I remembered that I had left my school bag up in the room. "Hey Emma, I left my bag upstairs. You go ahead and get to school. I know you wanted to look around first." Emma stared at me in an 'this had better not be an I'm staying home trick' look that she's nearly mastered and I flinched. Emma knew me better at times than I knew myself, which is actually kind of creepy. But this time is wasn't a trick, I really had forgotten my bag. "I promise that I will make it to school." To show that I was being honest I held out my pinky finger. Emma sighed and wrapped her thumb around it in our own special promise before pulling back. I closed the door and stepped back to allow Emma to drive off down the road. Looking at my watch I was that I had an hour and a half to get to school. Running upstairs I quickly unlocked the door, went to my bed and grabbed my black messenger bag. I tossed it over my shoulder and headed back out.

The sky above me as I walk seemed to darken, but the clouds didn't let loose the rain that yearned to fall. I continued to walk, not seeming to get anywhere. When I looked at my watch again I saw that it was 6:14 A.M. "Shit!" I yelled out to myself. I held onto my bag as I started to run. In all honesty I never bothered to check how far away the school was, so I didn't even know how far away from Forks high school I was currently. Heck, I didn't know if I was anywhere near La Push anymore. The only sound around me had been my combat boots on the asphalt, so when I heard the roar of a motorcycle behind me I jumped around and fell flat on my butt. "Damn it!" I let the rest of my body fall back and decided to just stay where I was. It really didn't bother me if I got to school or not.

The motorcycle got closer and closer until I could see someone stop just out of my peripheral vision. The person jumped off of their motorcycle, tossed off their helmet and ran to my side. "Hey are you alright?" The guy knelt down next to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. He looked to be about two years my junior or so, maybe 15, with long black hair. His skin was a russet color and his eyes dark brown. The only reason I could tell that he was younger was the little bit of childish roundness still on his chin. I guessed that he belong to the Native American tribe that lived on the La Push reservation.

I blinked and turned my eyes towards the teen, frowning. "Well, by alright I doubt that you mean running late for school or being lost. If you do mean that for some really odd reason then yes, I guess you could say I'm doing perfectly fine."

The guy grinned as he stood up and reached down a hand towards me. Grabbing hold he pulled me to my feet as though I weighed nothing. I muttered my thanks as I reached down to adjust my bag. "It's no problem. So, where do you go to school, I'll give you a lift." I looked at the bike behind him before turning my eyes back to him with an eyebrow raised. He just seemed to ignore it as he walked back to his bike and picked up his helmet from the ground. "Don't worry," he said as he swung himself onto the older bike. "I fixed her up myself so she's safe. Well, safe as far as I know, this is a test run."

"Great, so I'm your guinea pig then." I sighed as I glanced down at my watch once more. It was 6:21. Anymore time wasted and Emma would kill me. "Look kid, I'm not usually in the habit of taking rides from strangers, let alone one that seems to be skipping school, but I'm in a rush. Think you can get me to Forks High School in under a half hour?"

"Forks High, coming right up." He tossed his helmet at me with his grin never leaving his face.

"What about yourself?" I asked as I pulled the helmet onto my head and attempted to buckle it. The guy laughed at me and grabbed a hold of my bag strap, pulling me over to him. He reached up and did he job that I couldn't. Again, I muttered my thanks as I slid on behind him and he started up the bike.

"I've been living here all my life. I know the streets better than the people who made them so don't worry too much. Anyways, hardly anyone is ever out on the roads at this time." As soon as my feet were off of the ground we were off. I barley even had time to wrap my arms around his waist. Surprisingly the ride was quick, but I enjoyed every second of it. I'd never been on a motorcycle before since I'd only ever had my old sedan before it was totaled. Just as we were reaching the entrance to the school parking lot he revved the engine and pulled it into a wheelie.

I tightened my arms around him as we landed back onto both wheels and he pulled to a stop. I blinked as he turned his head to smile back at me. "That… was fun." I whispered, not really sure if he could hear me or not with the helmet on. I slowly unwrapped my arms and stood up and off of the motorcycle. Once again I fumbled with the latch and again he had to help me. He gently pulled the helmet off of my head and place it on his own, flipping the visor up so that he could talk.

"Where do you live? If you're that far out from Forks than you should probably consider getting yourself a car to get to school from now on. I won't always be there to find you laying in the street."

"I'm staying at a lodge just inside the border of La Push actually. When I looked at the map a couple of days ago it hadn't seemed like it was that far, but apparently it's further than I thought."

"The nearest lodge to Forks that's in La Push is over 9 miles away. You thought that you would walk that?" I could see the laughter in his dark brown eyes and I frowned.

"If you think I'm not up for it then I'd love to prove you wrong. I just don't know this place well enough to go trekking through the woods when I'm busy. Any other time and knowing that I'm going in the proper direction I could have jogged that quite easily."

He revved the engine of the bike again and grinned up at me. "Then come on over to the reservation and we can see exactly what you're made of. What's your name by the way?"

"It's Mik, and yours?"

"You'll have to come down to find out. See you later Mik." He flipped his visor down and sped off out of the parking lot. I continued to stare after his disappearing figure until the alarm on my watch began to sound. I switched the alarm off, knowing that it was five minutes until seven. Adjusting my bag around my shoulder I turned and started towards the entrance to the school building. The morning light caught on something to my right and I turned to see a very nice car. I whistled quietly to myself as I stared. It was a sleek silver S60R Volvo, not really a car you'd expect to see in a small little town like this.

"Mik!" I turned at the voice, dragging my eyes away from the car. Emma was standing on the sidewalk next to the stairs waving at me. Behind her was a group of six people: three boys and three girls. One of the girls was glaring at me as though I had stolen something that was hers. Shrugging I walked over to Emma and loped my arm through hers. Together we walked inside to the front office. "So, how did you ever make it here on time, because I know that you didn't run."

"A local gave me a ride actually. I wouldn't have made it without it." The office was small and quaint. The lady at the front desk looked up as we entered and smiled at us, her name plate said Shelly Cope.

"How may I help the two of you?"

"We're looking for where to get our schedules. It's our first day." Emma stated as she leaned her free arm against the desk with a grin. "We're hoping that you could help us."

"Well we don't have many new students, but this year seems to be busy." Ms. Cope stood and walked over to a filing cabinet. "First young Isabella a few weeks ago and now the two of you. Well, I can help you with anything you need." She pulled out two pieces of papers and walked back to her desk, grabbing another two papers; these ones green; before passing them to us. "This actually makes it easy because I knew exactly where your schedules were. Please have your teachers sign the green paper and leave it with your last period teacher. They'll bring them to me. Also I'll have a packet of papers for you tomorrow for you and your parents to sign."

"Of course ma'am, but I might have to fax them to my parents and then have them fax the papers back to you. They're currently in Nevada. Mik here is actually emancipated so it'll just be her signature." She nodded once and we left the office with our papers. I looked over at Emma's paper and saw that she had been placed in a few advanced classes: Government, Gym, English, advanced Chemistry, Lunch, advanced Spanish and finally advanced Music Theory. When I glanced down at my own paper I frowned: Advanced Art, Government, English, Gym, Lunch, Psychology, and ending the day with advanced Spanish. I glanced to see who my teachers were and memorized their names quickly as well as what building the classes were in. "So it seems that we have English and lunch together and that's it this year." Emma said as she looked over at my paper and then patted my shoulder. "Have fun looking for your classes. I'll see you on the other side." She ruffled my hair and took off out of the door.

I slowly followed after her and realized that the receptionist had forgotten to give us maps of the school. I didn't really want to bother with going back, even if it was a few steps behind me. Looking around I saw building two nearby and building three next to it. Assuming that I was standing next to building one I took off around the school. Hearing the bell ring I walked a little faster, already late for my first class. 'Building four, building six… where is building seven?' "That it! I'm done, no more, I'm leaving!" I growled to myself and turned around. I stopped though and blinked as I saw a girl walking towards me.

She looked between 17 and 19 and was about 5"6 with a lithe body. She moved with the perfect grace of a dancer. Looking her over I realized that she was very pixie like in looks. Short pixie styled dark brown hair, petite, gold eyes and just overall beautiful. She wore a white blouse with bell sleeves, light blue jeans and heeled boots. She looked up at me and frowned, but she still continued to walk. If I remembered correctly she was a part of that group that I had seen early this morning. Of course I hadn't gotten a good look at any of them aside from the girl that was glaring at me. Her frown faded quickly and she walked the last few steps to where I was. "Hello, are you lost?" Her voice was like bells.

"Utterly. I'm looking for building seven, but can't seem to find it. The receptionist didn't give me a map and I've checked the other buildings, but I can't find it anywhere." I swear that she kept frowning at me, but it was so quick that I couldn't be sure.

"Well first off, you're facing the wrong way. Building seven has the music rooms so they placed it farther away from the other buildings. Also it's a much new addition so there wasn't much room next to the other buildings. Come on, it's this way." The girl gently grabbed my hand, her skin was slightly cold but not too cold for me to handle. The feeling sent shivers down my back as I tried to suppress a memory from over taking me. She pulled me along into the trees and we walked maybe three or four minutes before the trees parted and I could see building seven before us. A large section was glass windows, unlike the rest. She pulled me into a door in the glass section and the teacher looked at us.

"Welcome to class. Alice please take your seat, you know the current assignment." Alice, as I just found out, walked over to a stool in the corner blocked by a canvas, and put into the corner where the regular wall blocked her view by a foot before turning into the glass wall. I just continued to stand there as the teacher looked me over. "And you are?"

"Um, I'm Mik. Mik Hyland, I'm your new student." I continued my look of the room. It was your ordinary art studio, but with a view of the forest on two sides. All of the students were seated in a random way, with absolutely no order.

"Alright then Miss Hyland, just take a stool and place it to where ever you want to stay for the year. I'll bring you out a blank canvas and some materials. Would you like paints, coal, pastels, or colored pencils?"

I picked up a stool that was nearby me and looked about for a spot to sit in. "Well that would depend ma'am. What are we supposed to be making?"

"That's a good question. Most of my students never ask before giving their favorite material to work with. The class' assignment is to recreate that last picture that they looked at. It must be on canvas, but it is each persons' choice as to how they complete the assignment."

"Then coal please." As the teacher; Ms. Mayhem; left the room to get me my equipment, I placed the stool next to the window in the back. As I waited I looked out of the window at the dark, cloudy sky with the trees standing tall around us. I have always enjoyed a cloudy day rather than a sunny one. Recently though, that just seemed to be a stronger feeling than it used to.

"Mik," I looked to my left where Alice sat. "I'm Alice Cullen, it's so great to meet you."

"Pleasure. How long have you been living here?"

"Not too long actually. My family and I moved down from Alaska a few years ago. When did you get into town?"

"Today," I laughed quietly to myself. "First time in Forks, but I'm staying at a lodge in La Push with my friend Emma. We've been there for two days now." I looked back out the window in time to see a single bean of sunlight shine through the clouds onto a patch of pine trees. I placed the image into my memory to paint later on when I would have some time to myself. Alice allowed me to enjoy my silence by starting on her own work. Once Ms. Mayhem returned I set up my canvas so that my back would be to the window. Smiling I watched her walk away and I picked up the coal. The last picture I had looked at was easy enough to do without reference. I had looked at the picture enough times when I was a child that I knew every detail perfectly. The picture I had last looked at was special to me since it was of my great-grandfather with his best friend. It hit close to home for me. The memory came faster than I could stop it.

-Flashback-

I was standing in front of a large fireplace when I was sixteen and before me on the mantle was an 8x6 painting. "I'm going now. Sorry that I can't take your painting with me, but I don't think that they would let me," I said to the painting. Every since I could remember I had always spoken to the painting. It seemed as though one of the figures in the painting was able to hear my voice. Oddly enough though, it wasn't my great-grandfather that I thought this about, but his friend. I snapped a quick photo with my phone so that I would have some part of the painting close to me.

"You had better leave soon aunty Mi. I don't think mayma and papa are happy. They're yelling at each other about who should make you leave." My seven year old niece Annabell walked into the living room. Tears were falling from her small face as she spoke. Slowly I knelt down so that I was more at her level and held out my arms. She ran into my hug as though her life depended on that small contact. Sometimes I thought that it nearly did. Annabell was my life. I had been the one to raise her for the past year and a half by dropping out of school. And before that I had been practically raising her while my parents worked and my brother was off who knew where. Annabell was my daughter in everything that mattered. I had even been the one to name her; Annabell Marie Hyland.

"You know that I'll send you letters as often as I can. You also have the phone that I bought for you so you can call me whenever you want to. When I find a place that is safe, I'll file the papers and get you out of here." I squeezed her closer and then pulled away, "I promise my little bell. I love you." I walked to the front door, took a deep breath and opened it. Emma sat there in my car with her arms crossed. When she saw me she leaned over and honked on the horn. 'I should have known that she would find out.'

-End Flashback-

"Mik? Mik are you alright?" I shook my head and forced the memory away. I blinked and moved my hand from the canvas. I was nearly out of coal and I'd finished the background. I turned my head and found Alice standing there looking worried, her hand on my shoulder. "Class is about to end. Are you feeling well?"

"Oh, I'm fine. I just seemed to have dozed off. What should I do with my canvas?"

"Leave it here. Ms. Mayhem only has three art classes and our class is the advanced one so we're the only ones to use this room. There's one other art class down the hall so no one comes in here." I stood up and followed Alice out of the building. All of the students in our class were walking ahead of us. "Ms. Mayhem always lets us out early to get to our next class. Let me see your schedule and I'll help you get to where you need to go." I pulled out my schedule and passed it over to her. "Hmm, you have gym with me fourth hour and we have lunch together. Let's see… building six, that's easy enough. Mr. Jefferson is nice."

Alice led me over into building six and to my class. "Guess I'll see you later on then Alice."

Alice nodded and smiled. "If you get lost you can ask any one of my sibling that you run into. They aren't that hard to find. Or you can ask my boyfriend Jasper Hale and his twin Rosalie." When she saw my look of worry she reached over and squeezed my hand. "Don't worry, they won't bite." A flicker of amusement went through her eyes before she went walking into another direction. Turning and walking through the open door I sighed once more that day. The day had barley even started and I had just walked into gossip heaven. Everyone was situated into groups of five or six, chatting away before class.

Over on one side of the room sat the girl from this morning who had been glaring at me. She was talking to a guy next to her. She was quite beautiful to be honest, but it was in a casual kind of beauty that was quite different from Alice's beauty. Her skin was pale with straight dark brown hair over a heart shaped face. Her large eyes were the color of chocolates. She was dressed in complete tom-boy clothes, as though she had grabbed the first things from her closet that she could find. The guy sitting next to her on the other hand was very handsome. He had pale skin exactly like Alice's and was the same height as my brother at 6"2' with a slender yet muscular body. His bronze hair was messy and looked perfectly unkept. His gold eyes never strayed far from the brunet, if they moved at all. He also had high cheek bones and full lips that almost any girl would kill to have, but his strong jaw line made him seem stubborn. He was dressed in a long black sleeved shirt, grey short sleeved button up and blue jeans with regular sneakers.

My eyes quickly darted around for an empty seat and I was thankful to find one in the very back corner on the opposite side of the two. Keeping my head down, I made my way quickly to the desk and sat down. Another reason that I have always hated school? Well it's the same reason that I hate being in public. My eyes always draw attention. I was lucky that Alice and Ms. Mayhem didn't ask and no one in my first hour noticed, but now that I had an actual class it wouldn't take long before people did start to take notice. People are always afraid of my eyes, or way too interested; the latter being the least common. I pulled my sketchbook and a pencil from my bag and I began to draw. Usually I would make doodles, but after art class I wanted something real. I started on the sketch of my great-grandfather's friend. I never could remember his name, but I knew it was on the tip of my tongue.

The bell rang and I closed my eyes in annoyance. I opened them and put my sketchbook away. "Alright class, let's see who remembers anything about the Constitution!" Mr. Jefferson called out as he walked into the classroom. He had two stacks of papers in his hands. "Miss May, please pass one of these out to everyone. Mr. Carver, pass these to everyone as well, oh and please give this paper to our new student." Mr. Jefferson grabbed a paper off of his desk and laid it on top of the stack 'Carver' held. The two students did as asked rather quickly. Everyone seemed to know how this class worked and didn't touch their papers. "On your desks are two assignments. I want the yellow paper finished first and turned in on my desk. You will have 20 minutes to complete it."

Moans filled the room from various students, all of whom fixed their desks back into neat rows. "Now, now. There are only seven questions so don't moan. Most of you should finish on time. I also want complete sentences! Once you've turned in your yellow paper you'll find yourself a partner that's completed theirs and work together on the white sheet quietly. Alright, begin." Mr. Jefferson sat down at his desk and watched the class. Flipping over my yellow paper my brow creased.

Constitution Quiz

1) When did the Federal Convention convene?

2) On this day, how many states did delegations come from?

3) When was it decided that a new draft would be written?

4) What kinds of sessions were held?

5) How many delegates signed?

6) Who refused to sign?

7) Where were they from?

I quickly filled out the answers to the questions and signed my name at the top. Keeping my head down I stood up and turned my quiz in to Mr. Jefferson and then walked back to my desk to look over the extra paper that was given to me. It turned out to just be a list of items that were needed for the class. The final paper that I had to worry about was my pair work... 'Such fun.' "Hello there," a voice said from beside me. I peeked over and saw the 'Carver' guy sitting down at the desk beside mine. "I'm Daniel Carver, Mr. Jefferson's T.A. We don't have an even number of students in the class so if you don't mind I'll be your partner for this assignment." I took this moment to finally look at Carver fully. Quickly he pushed himself away and tripped over the desk behind him. "Holy Crap!" My face hardened at Daniel's action. "Dude you're eyes…"

"What the hell is wrong with my eyes?" Daniel shivered as I glared at him. Now we had the classes' attention, Mr. Jefferson's included. A few people backed away like Daniel did with their own choice phrases.

"Look at her eyes."

"Are those contacts?"

"What a freak!"

"What the Fuck? Does she have a disease or something?"

Other people didn't say anything out loud but I could tell that they were thinking along the same lines as everyone else. My glare intensified and I looked down at my paper. Quickly filling in the proper order of the Bill of Rights I stood up. "Mr. Jefferson may I go to the bathroom?"

"Um, yes of course. Just finish your assignment and you can."

"I'm already done." I walked to his desk and set the assignment down before exiting the room. At first I was pretty lost. I didn't know where the bathrooms were in any of the buildings so I ended up just wandering around. After a few minutes I finally found one. Once inside I locked the door and sat on the counter. 'Who cares if the teacher has issues with it, I'm not going back to that class right now.' I know what high school is like. Once I get to my next class the majority of the school will know all about my eyes. "Why do I always have to deal with this?" I muttered to myself. "So what if my eyes are amethyst. They're natural and I like them." Once again my mind drifted to a memory.
