Chapter 1: Rude Awakenings

~*~

perfect by nature

icons of self indulgence

just what we all need

more lies about a world

that never was and never will be

have you no shame don't you see me

you know you've got everybody fooled

look here she comes now

bow down and stare in wonder

oh how we love you no flaws when you're pretending

but now i know

she never was and never will be

you don't know how you've betrayed me

and somehow you've got everybody fooled

A tall dark haired elf stood in front of his brothers room. He looked very inpatient, with his arms crossed and his foot tapping on the cold stone. Suddenly his sharp elven hearing picked up faint footsteps.

He sighed and hissed under his breath "Finally." Another elf ran into the hall panting and trying to catch his breath.

"El what took you so long?" the elf Elladan asked his twin brother.

"Well *sorry*!" The younger twin Elrohir rolled his eyes. "You know we're not allowed to use it before dawn." He said handing his brother a small golden gong.

"Excellent!" Elladan grinned as they cracked open the ranger's door.

The two elves crept silently through the dark room. Elrohir took the gong and put it up to Aragorn's head. He looked at his brother and nodded. Elladan drew back the mallet and hit the gong. A loud ringing noise blasted through the small room. Aragorn shot five feet above his mattress. He landed on his bed in a daze. It took him awhile to adjust to his surroundings and the first thing he heard were the twins cracking up.

He of course got angry and leapt up yelling. "OUT OUT! I never sleep because of you two half-wits!"

Lord Elrond had a very good morning. So far the twins had not destroyed anything and Aragorn and Legolas (who was staying) did not come back half dead. Then he heard yells and shouts. Well it was good while it lasted.

The elf lord sighed "five..four..three..two..one" His two twin sons raced through the room. Elrohir was carrying a small gold gong. Elrond had no time to wonder about the gong because he had to jump out of the way to avoid getting run over by his adopted son Aragorn. It was really a comical sight, two elves running for their lives closely followed by a ranger in his sleep tunic. Just then Prince Legolas stumbled into the small room half asleep.

"Legolas move!" Elrond shouted. Legolas' head snapped up and he caught sight of the three running to him. The prince leapt lightly away. The elves and human were racing right to their father. Elladan who was in front skidded to a stop a few feet in front of Elrond. Elrohir plowed into him driving them both to the ground. Aragorn tripped over them both.

They laid sprawled on the floor. Legolas walked snickering behind Elrond.

"What were you doing?" Elrond snapped at the three trying to get up. Legolas knew at once that this wasn't going to concern him so he tuned out and entertained himself by watching a small fish bowl.

"Legolas should these two be punished?" Elrond asked turning around. He noticed the prince was staring off into space.

"Legolas!" Elrond shouted.

"Wha?" Legolas looked at him.

"Should they be punished?"

"Well, I don't know. I mean they don't look sorry at all. Look at Elrohir he's smiling!" Elrohir was smiling but when Legolas said that the smile was wiped off his face and replaced with a frown. "Nope they're not sorry at all." The twins glared at him.

"Well I guess that means you two will not go to that archery contest." Elrond said. The twin's jaws dropped.

"What! We've been looking forward to that for months!" Elladan shouted.

"Well I guess you'll have to go next year."Elrond said turning on his heel and walking out of the room. The twins shot Legolas and Aragorn a look that Aragorn knew too well. He spun around and shot out the door with Legolas hot on his heels.

Soon Legolas got up beside him as they skidded around a corner and ran outside. They ran about thirty feet onto a bridge. By now the twins were about two feet behind them. Suddenly the twins lunged and gripped the ranger and elven prince's ankles. The two friends stumbled and fell over the bridge. Elladan and Elrohir soon figured out their mistake and braced themselves with their legs. Aragorn and Legolas dangled about three feet above the water with the twins hanging onto their ankles slipping off the bridge.

Then Elrohir slipped and fell. His leg hooked around Elladan's arm pulling them both over.
