Close Second
Jasper remembers the Volturi.
He remembers meeting them, and in turn, tasting all of their emotions (as he did with everyone.)
But there is one thing he remembers that he keeps hidden. Not only for his family's sake, but for his own as well.
The boy had stood there in the backdrop the entire time he spent with Aro, looking so regal there in his dark cloak and ruby red eyes. There was an air of melancholic apathy about him that anyone would feel if they were graced with his presence, but the most wonderful thing of all was the boys emotions.
For there were none at all.
Jasper focused, honed his gift unto the boy and still he felt nothing at all.
It was baffling, it was atrocious...it was beautiful.
The relief was overwhelming. The weights were lifted off of his shoulders and for once he did not have the burden of everyones pain and happiness upon his heart.
He was free.
Jasper will never forget that moment, or that boy. And whenever he wishes for a haven from his dreaded gift he thinks of him, so many thousands of miles away and when he really tries, he can almost taste the frequency in which his apathy runs.
It's the only thing that keeps him sane.
That, and Alice of course.
(But it's always a close second.)
