The Girl from the Black Forest

Prologue

I'm running. As far as my legs could take me. As far as my legs could carry me. I'm in the woods. Everywhere I look there's a tree, scary shadows in the dark looming over me as I struggle to keep the distance between the black figure and I. I see eyes. Big yellow eyes staring at me from between the woods.

The black figure is still after me. I don't know what it is. I just know it wants to kill me. To kill me. In this moment, that I realize how dangerous this situation really is, I trip over a branch I don't notice on the ground. In seconds, I'm on the ground and the black figure is getting closer. I realize I could get exactly what I wanted; I could die, and just forget about the world. I won't be in danger anymore.

But I can't. I promised my mom before it murdered her, that I would do my best to stay alive, and never give up.

The black figure is getting closer still. I scramble up to my feet and start running again. I look back to see how close he is. That is a mistake; a big mistake. I trip over a stone, and I end up falling again.

My head hits a sharp stone. Everything's black. Everything. Black.
