In the Dark
It was so quiet there. The walls of darkness surrounded me, even though I knew that the room was large…
I felt as if I was alone, as if I would never see another again! My heart started to race! I couldn't breathe!
Help! I though, then I found my voice.
"Help!" I called out. A figure stirred in the darkness.
"What's wrong…?" the voice muttered.
"The night." I said. "The darkness. I can't…I can't…!"
"Just go back to bed…" said the voice. I tried to calm down.
Fear seized my throat as the one near me went back to sleep.
What if, I thought, When I go to bed, I never wake up?
I clenched my hands and gritted my teeth. This darkness scares me!
Help me! Help!
I took a deep breath. I tried to calm down. If I shouted out again, the one with me would get angry.
I opened my mouth. "…brother…?"
My friend, my brother, sat up. "Ugh, what's it now, Al?"
I hesitated, and then spoke. "The dark…it scares me."
My brother sighed. "Okay, fine…I'm here."
I smiled. Even by saying seemly simple words, he brought courage to my heart.
"Thank you, Edward." said I.

A few years later…
I felt the darkness, but I couldn't draw in a breath. My fears gripped me, and my body could to nothing to react to it.
Help! I thought.
It was so dark. I already couldn't feel, couldn't smell, and couldn't taste. Now it was like I couldn't see or hear.
Darkness gripped all of my fears. My fear of losing my brother was the biggest fear of all. It grabbed at me, etched itself within me.
"Big brother…" I whispered.
My big brother didn't answer.
"Big brother!" I whispered, a bit louder.
My brother, Edward, grunted in response.
I sighed. "Big brother…this darkness is scary."
I knew he was asleep, but I went on.
"I can't sleep, Edward. I can't feel. I can't smell. I can't taste. I can't even cry!"
He snored. I sighed.
"But…big brother…"
Inside the armour shell of mine, I smiled.
"I love being with you. And I love you. Those facts help ease the pain.
"Even in the dark…"
