Drawing Swords
Prologue ~~~
A huge, dark wooden door burst open and a tall, young, dark-haired woman ran into the throne room of her king. She cried, in despair, "My liege, they have escaped! Again!" The king sat up straight in his magnificent dark wooden and gold throne, adjusting the noble crown atop his curly mop of golden hair.
"How many?" she shook her head and wrung her hands, obviously perturbed.
"All of them, majesty. I sent out all available he-"
"Stop! Enough! This madness had gone on for far, far too long." The dark- haired woman frowned and stared into the liquid brown eyes of her king.
"Your highness? I do not understand." the King rose, eyes blazing, and drew his sword.
"Neither do I, Lylae, but there is only one thing left to do. Go and get the Jade Pendant from your mother." The brunette beauty shook her head in disbelief.
"But, I."
"Lylae." the King said warningly.
"Your majesty it is too dangerous! You are compromising an entire city of-"
"Do as I say!!!" the King roared, startling her, his voice echoing off the stone walls. She stopped, eyes wide then woman bowed low.
"Yes, your majesty." The King glared at her as she scurried away.
When she was out of earshot, he called softly,
"Oh, Reyather! You may approach. She is gone." a small, sickly pallid man slunk out of the shadows, his yellow teeth gleaming as he smiled wickedly.
"I heard all, my Lord." The King smiled.
"Good man. Go and tell the rest of the company. They are awaiting my news." Reyather smiled coldly, bowed low, and slithered away. The King smiled.
"My plan is working. Very soon, Lylae will trust me and Reyather and the company will be under my wing. It will only be a matter of time before the entire city will think their poor, lonely king is sacrificing himself. Ha! Such fools!" the King sat down in his throne, cackling softly to himself.
