Sacrifice

"Get out of the way, Sammy."

The chill in Dean's voice was as cold as ice and his eyes reflected his intensity as he stared hard, his gun raised and steady, at the demon with blackened dead eyes that stood motionless behind his brothers protecting body.

"It's not what you think Dean," Sam said pleadingly.

"Well, lets see Sam. I think she's a filthy disgusting demon who apparently has you wrapped around her little finger and you're just standing there like a big, dumb, idiot protecting her. Is that about right?" Dean spoke and the sarcasm and disbelief danced heavily across his words as his gun tried desperately to find a clear shot around his brothers constantly moving body.

"She's different Dean! She's not like the others! She's been helping me!" Sam yelled, the anger and denial rising in his voice.

Dean scoffed and stepped closer, momentarily lowering his weapon, ready to slap his brother across the head with it in utter infuriation. "Yeah, I bet she's been helping you all right……" He shook his head and raised his weapon once again. "Sammy, C'mon! Wake up! She's a demon! The thing we hunt! The thing we kill! Everything about her is evil! I don't know what she's been filling your head with but its over. I can't allow this, Dad would never have allowed this…..I don't care what the circumstance is……" His voice trailed as he said his final piece. "Now, move away Sam."

"I won't move Dean," Sam said calmly, his eyes shining but his voice even. "We save people, we destroy evil and we make the world a better place. Killing her won't be saving the world; it'll be hurting it! She's just like us Dean, she hunts the darkness and she saved my damn life! I won't let you just send her back to hell!"

The two brothers stood there silent, face to face, the tension between them practically crackling in the dead air of the dark, dingy, hotel room in which they stood; their eyes speaking back and forth, the words that simply would not come.

Finally Ruby spoke, carefully placing her fingers on Sam's looming shoulder and pushed him aside gingerly, her eyes trained on the barrel of Dean's poised gun. "It's all right, Sam. I knew this would happen. I knew your brother's ignorance would prevent him from seeing an ally. Let him do what he feels is right."

The bullet rang out loud and cracked hazily at their ears. The gun smoked lazily from its pointed end and Dean's eyes widened in total surprise and unbelievable fear.

Sam lay there barely moving on the floor bleeding deeply from his chest, a result from jumping affront Ruby and taking her fate for her.

Dean flew to his brother's side, his hands instantly trying to smother the flowing wound as tears filled his eyes and his throat clogged in a muffled scream.

Ruby knelt down almost as quickly and placing her hands atop Dean's, she seemed to emit a golden light from somewhere deep within. Dean did not seem to notice her as he barely said his brother's name, "Sammy…..", the overwhelming panic of what he had done burrowing hard against his chest as he watched Sammy seize up in unbearable pain.

The light she emitted became stronger forcing Dean to notice, as he shielded his eyes from it, removing a hand from his brothers gaping chest.

Finally, the light died and Dean removed his hand from his eyes, a confused and worried look across his face. Sam coughed and Dean turned his head towards him.

He watched with his mouth open wide as the wound began to heal itself, flesh creating from thin air, the blood drying and crusting where it should be pouring out his brothers life.

Dean looked at Ruby, her eyes human-like, watching Sam with her hand holding his and gently stroking his fingers.

She did not look at Dean when she said, "Ignorant prick."
