The Cave Paintings

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Bauldilaire walked a long the street when she saw a gathering of people. "Gabba?" Sunny asked, which probably meant something like "What's going on?" "I don't know," Klaus said. The children wriggled through the crowd. They saw Count Olaf on top of a platform. He was smiling and his eyes were shining. "Good People!" he began. "I have discovered a way to make us all rich! I found some old cave paintings the other day when I was exploring the caves. The Bauldilairs at once knew that Count Olaf, their greedy nemesis, was up to something. "I have taken pictures of the paintings for anyone who would like to take a peek." "I want to!" Klaus said. Olaf handed Klaus the photos. One painting showed a family of cave people sitting around a cave sleeping. Another showed a bunch of cave men hunting a deer. The final showed some cave men hunting a T-Rex. "So anyways," Olaf continued. "We can start a tourists attraction and you fine people have only to pay $1,000 and in return get a certain percent depending how many donate." "I," Klaus began. "am not paying a cent to your fake attraction." "If Klaus doesn't pay then I won't either!" Violet screamed. "No pay!" Sunny shrieked. Why did the Bauldilairs say this?
