Fall to Pieces
She stared without seeing at the letter she was holding in her hands. Feeling someone come up behind her, she turned around.
"Oh James, what are we going to do?" she asked, hiccupping softly, and looking at her son.
He gathered her slim body in his arms, rubbing her head with his chin. "I don't know, Lils, but we will make it through this, trust me?" he lifted her face to meet his.
She nodded, letting her arms wind around his neck. She nuzzled her face in his shoulder, not wanting him to talk anymore. She just wanted to be held.
Harry watched from his playpen, making little contented baby noises.

Later that night, sitting together on the couch in their living room, they were discussing things with Dumbledore, and finalizing plans.
"We've discussed this with Sirius, and he's agreed to be our secret keeper," James told him, hugging Lily to his side.
Dumbledore looked worried. "Perhaps I should take that job," he suggested. James shook his head.
"No sir, we don't want to add more to your plate. Besides, Sirius has agreed to go into hiding too."
"Well, if I can't dissuade you," Dumbledore said, but his worried look didn't disappear.

The next three months were miserable. James felt more cooped up than he ever had with his parents. At least when he had been home, he could fly on his broomstick without any worry.
Lily watched as her husband started fading away from her.
"James, it's going to be okay," she soothed every night, curled up in bed with him.
He held her tightly, never letting go.
Harry never noticed the tension between his parents, content as a one-year-old could be.
He giggled when his father made pretty-colored bubbles fly out of his wand, and he had his toy broom, which he had flown into the cat. What else could he want?
But one night, the pretty bubbles were no more.
