Disclaimer: Naturally, Methos and Duncan MacLeod in no way belong to me but to Mssrs. Davis and Panzer. Their genius, they get the credit. There, now we can avoid any legalalities. However, the "she" in the story (she being Nadya Jamesson) is MINE. My creation, my genius. =0) So leave her be, if you don't mind. Thanks much! Now, on with the story, short though it may be.

Prologue: I love "Sound the Bugle" by Bryan Adams so I wanted to write a short little musing based on the lyrics. Therefore, this is all from Nadya's point of view...third person limited, if you will. This is the first one of this type of writing I have ever done so reviews are requested. Thanks!

Sound the Bugle Now

................................................................................

Sound the bugle now

Play it just for me.

As the seasons change,

Remember how I used to be.

Now I can't go on.

I can't ever start.

I've got nothing left,

Just an empy heart.

She stood on the bridge overlooking the Seine, sadness in her eyes, two red roses clutched tightly in her hands, thorns biting almost through her leather gloves. It had been four years...four long years to the day. She missed them so much. The wind tore at her coat, her hair, her face, her eyes, almost seeming like it wanted her to cry.

She had tried to be brave, tried to do her best to go on with life, but, without them, it was hard. Sometimes, she felt so alone. Sometimes, all she wanted was her mother's voice at her side, a loving hand on her head, an ear and heart who truly understood her. Where could she turn now?

I'm a soldier,

Wounded so I must give up the fight.

There's nothing more for me.

Lead me away

Or leave me lying here.

Sound the bugle now

Tell them I don't care.

There's not a road I know

That leads to anywhere.

Without a light, I fear that

Will stumble in the dark

Lay right down and decide

Not to go on.

She had friends, yes. People who cared for her, loved her, but those same people had lied to her. Had kept secrets from her, all in the name of trying to protect her, to 'spare her'. It had turned her life on its head, her world to pieces, her identity into a shadow, in one moment. What did she have left to believe in? What did she have left to trust in? What could she hold as her own? She wasn't even 'herself' anymore; the girl she had known as herself was dead. How could she move on? She almost chuckled, knowing what her mother would say: "You are who you are and no one else. And you will always be."

Then from on high, somewhere in the distance

There's a voice that calls, "Remember who you are.

If you lose yourself,

Then your courage soon will follow.

So be strong tonight;

Remember who you are."

She felt them...nearby...close. But they didn't come to her; they gave her this moment alone. Finally, she kissed both roses smilingly. Tears glistened like dewdrops and then the roses became the Seine's most beautiful ornament, a living testament to a love that lived on....hopefully, for many centuries. She glanced at them and moved away from the railing; she would keep this friendship, this partnership, at all costs. It was all she had left; she wouldn't let it die. She would fight on.

Duncan and Methos accepted her into the space between them, the old man slipping an arm around her shoulders confidingly. The weight of the sword settled into her stride, into all of theirs, as they walked off the bridge together. Soldiers in a battle, a battle for their very lives, for their right to live in peace.

You're a soldier now,

Fighting in a battle

To be free once more!

Yeah, that's worth fighting for!
