His Voice
It makes less sense the more she hears. The last thing she thinks she actually understood was something about SG-1's latest mission going badly, resulting somehow – she wasn't entirely sure how – in Cameron Mitchell falling ill to an alien virus.
The virus part made perfect sense – it was one they'd come across before – but ten minutes later, said patient had managed to get onto a completely different topic: American football or some such.
He throws in a sports metaphor she can't even begin to interpret and she tunes out exactly what he's saying to minimize the likelihood of a headache later on. She listens to the tone of his voice instead.
She's always liked his voice, especially at times like these. It reminds her that he is still alive and that is always a comfort.
"Dr Lam? Carolyn?"
She glances up to meet amused eyes of piecing blue.
"You find me boring, don't you?" he says.
She aims an apologetic smile at him and shakes her head. "No, I don't find you boring at all," she replies honestly. "Sports, though…"
She drifts off and grins when he fakes hurt.
"How can you not like sports? Any sports? Football. Hockey. Basketball. Soccer..."
She shrugs. "It just doesn't appeal to me, I suppose."
They share a look and then she busies herself over at one of the benches, sorting through the bottles of painkillers lined up along it, until she finds the correct one. She unscrews the lid and palms the pills, then returns the bottle.
"Take these," she says, handing the tables to Cam and retrieving a glass of water for him. "You should be back to yourself in no time."
"No time, huh?" Cam grins. "That's good, 'cause I have a basketball game planned against Teal'c and the gang, come Friday." As an afterthought, he says, "you should come."
Smiling, she fingers the fabric of her shirt. "Okay," she agrees. She can feel the heat rise in her cheeks and hurriedly turns away. Her heart is racing faster than she would previously thought possible. "I'll see you then," she tells him over her shoulder.
Cam's voice stays with her for the rest of the day. "See ya, then."
