Disclaimer: I don't own Monk

Natalie was sitting on the patio when Monk noticed she was sitting alone. He came outside to join her.

"You okay," he asked gently.

"I think so," she said, "I've… well you know I've been going through a bit of a rough time so I've just been thinking through some things. I'm also thinking about you too," she said with a smile.

He smiled back at her and squeezed her hand.

"I know," she said, "that there have been times where we haven't exactly seen eye to eye-"

"Well we can't," he said, "I'm about a head taller then you"

"I didn't mean that literally," she laughed, "I mean where we don't always agree"

"That's natural," he said

She nodded.

"Anyway even though we don't always agree," she added, "You are my best friend. You've always been there for me. I know I can depend on you and the best thing is you're not just my friend for a reason. You're my friend just because."

He sighed inwardly. He knew what was on her mind.

"Natalie I-"

"Don't even try to argue the point," she said with a smile, "The last time you were there for me just because. There was no special reason or circumstances it was just because."

"It wasn't JUST BECAUSE," he said, "It was because you are my friend. You're my best friend and I love you and you were going through a lot. Yeah it wasn't a life or death situation but it was a situation that was affecting you. I couldn't think of myself even if I wanted to. Need always tops want."

"How is what I had a need," Natalie asked.

"Even a normal person could see the way you were feeling lately," Monk replied.

"But it was a huge thing the way-"

"It was nothing you wouldn't have done for me," Monk said, "I appreciate the praise. I really do but you are my friend and you always WILL be my friend.
