If one were to browse through the forbidden contents of L's computer, they would find me there. Well, not me in person, but a small file created under my name. There was one like it for each of his contacts, and all of the residents of Wammy's House. If one were to click on this file, they would be presented with a password prompt. While I won't reveal it here, we'll continue the hypothetical scenario by saying that they were able to correctly guess the combination. The file, surprisingly small, reads as such:
File 0015: Yokiji Rin
Alias: Always Alone, Misaki Ritsuka
Date of Birth: November 5th, 1993
Height: 165.1 cm
Weight: 52 kg
After which there is a list of cases that the two of us worked together on. Not many know this about him, but there were only two ways for a case to catch his attention: there either had to be more than ten victims, or a million dollars at stake. Near the bottom of the list, almost like a post-script, is typed The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases. This case is the only exception to the rule stated above. While no one, other than those involved, will ever know, it was linked to the Wammy's House. Specifically, to a man who used to reside there, known to the other children only as B. Backup.
His true name was Beyond Birthday.
If you're reading this, then I'm going to assume that you already know about the intellectual battle taking place between L and Kira. I'm also going to assume, at the risk of making an ass of us both, that you're aware of the race known as Shinigami, and how, sometimes, one drops his precious notebook to our world. I guess some of them are a little less intelligent than others, as, over the course of their history entwining with ours, two of them have dropped their eyes, as well. Don't ask me how, as I've yet to figure out how any living, self-conscious being could not notice that they were missing their eyeballs.
One set of eyes fell to Beyond Birthday, and he used them to murder three people over the span of fourteen days. Don't convict him just yet, as he wouldn't have been able to unless they were already at the end of their lives. Only Shinigami can end a life prematurely, although most are too lazy to do so. Anyway, these murders were used as an excuse to catch the attention of L, the one every child at Wammy's House was told to surpass. If Beyond couldn't surpass him as a detective, then he would do it as a criminal.
The other set of eyes came to me. It's how I knew L's name even though I was just a piece of trash locked away in a mental institution and had never met him before. It's how I recognized Kira was, even though I didn't know it myself at the time. And it's how, as an orphan on the streets, I caught the attention of Beyond Birthday. He became my mentor in all things. He was the first person I truly cared for, aside from the parents I can no longer remember. And, at the end of his life, he was the first man I truly mourned.
I'm getting ahead of myself, aren't I? Let's go back to the beginning, when a girl of only seventeen was sitting in a locked room, awaiting a visitor she was both anticipating, and dreading . . .
