They were standing in the Hub, the Doctor with his back against the Tardis, hands in pockets in the signature pose, and Jack trying not to lean on the wall, not to fidget on spot.

"You were more than just any other companion, Jack. You do know that, right?"

Jack closed his eyes tight, and tried to squash the fresh pain blossoming in his chest.

"Yeah, Doctor. I knew."

The use of past tense were deliberate, and he knew the Doctor would pick up on it.

"Well, I'll be going, then. You're sure you don't want to... Just one last time?"

Jack was staring at the floor, but managed to give a quick shake of the head. He knew the Doctor meant well, but he couldn't go through all that, not again.

The Doctor gave a quiet laugh. It sounded resigned, almost bitter. Jack felt as though he'd failed some kind of test.

"Right. Too much to ask, I guess."

Such a long time passed that Jack was sure he'd missed the opening of the Tardis door, and he was just waiting for the familiar sound to wash over him once more, when he felt a cool hand touch his chin, forcing his eyes to lock with the Doctor's.

"I wish you well, Jack. I hope you'll find happiness here."

The words sounded so formal, but the amount of pain and sadness in the Doctor's eyes hinted at a much deeper meaning, and it left Jack speechless. Before he knew what was happening, he felt a pair of soft, cool lips touch his. The touch faded so fast he didn't know if he'd imagined it or not.

Then the Doctor was standing in the open door of the Tardis, and with one last look at Jack, he ducked inside, and the once hated, familiar sound filled the room.

Jack stood there until long after the sound had faded. Then he lifted a shaky hand up and touched his lips, before slowly turning and finding his way back up to his office.

The rest of the team would be arriving soon. He needed to get to work.
