No one was in the room when the magnificent crow flew through the open window. The crow changed into Damon, and he sat down on his brother's bed, staring out the window. They were all celebrating Elena's return, and he wanted to celebrate, he really did, but he couldn't. Not with them. He didn't belong with them.
Oh, he was happy, so happy, that she had returned. But she hadn't been the one he was looking at after he had left. He had flown above them for a while, looking at his little bird. She was so excited to have her best friend back, and it had made him smile. He was still smiling, thinking of her, but only because no one was with him in the room to see it. If someone had been with him, he would hide his smile, putting up the wall automatically.
He wanted to go back, to be with them, but even through everything that had happened, he didn't belong with them. Maybe he never would. So now what would he do now? Would he leave Fell's Church? Could he leave his little bird?
He kept looking out the window at the night sky. It called to him, so he became the crow and flew out the window. He didn't know where he was going, he just had to fly. Maybe it would help to clear his head. But as far as he flew, Bonnie never left his mind.
Bonnie was in her room a few days after Elena's return. She was looking out her window, searching for him. He had left them so quickly; did he leave Fell's Church? It was strange, but she hoped he had stayed.
Why was she thinking of Damon? She should be with Elena. Elena needed her. They were best friends. Why was she here searching for Damon? He was the "outsider", sort of. He was the one who had left. He didn't care about them. She shouldn't care what happened to him, but she couldn't help it.
It was midnight before she gave up for sleep. She was too tired to keep waiting. She turned off the light and fell asleep.
She wouldn't see him sitting in the tree, watching over her. He hadn't left, but he hadn't shown himself to any of them yet. He wanted to watch over them secretly, just until he knew that there was no more danger to his…could he call them friends? They wouldn't call him their friend, so why should he call them friends? Why was he even here? Why wasn't he being what he was meant to be, dangerous Damon? He should leave, not think twice about abandoning these people. Why wouldn't he leave?
That's it, he thought. I'll leave now. I'll leave and I won't look back.
So why wasn't he going?
Get out of here! his mind screamed. But he couldn't leave now. He sensed danger was coming, and he had to protect…no, no, not protect. He had to stop other vampires from invading his territory. Yeah, that's why he wouldn't leave. This was his territory, no one else's. He didn't care about the humans, only his territory.
Now if only he could completely believe that…no. He told himself centuries ago that he wouldn't get close to anyone again, not after what Katherine did to him. He wouldn't let one little red-haired witch change that now.
Get away from her window. Go find this new power, this new threat, take them…a strange feeling came over him just then. He forgot what he was doing. Why was he looking in Bonnie's window when nothing was happening? He shook his head, thinking he should be doing something, but he had no idea what that was. He shrugged, turned into the crow, and flew away to find something more interesting.
Short, I know. But I love the idea of Bonnie and Damon together, and this was just something I wrote because of that. Hope you enjoyed!
