Prologue

Sprawled out in the grassy meadow that bordered her house's backyard, Winry Rockbell closed her eyes and lay an arm over her face. It was a beautiful day and she wore a white tank dress that came down to her ankles. As a light breeze tickled her cheeks, she started humming.

She wasn't humming anything in particular, but it was a familiar song to her, though she didn't remember the words. Winry rolled over and hugged the grass. She wanted to lay like this forever and not have to worry about anything. It was much better this way. She really missed Edward and it really hurt her that she would never see him again.

Mustang had been a good friend to her since Edward closed the gate, but it wasn't the same without him. At night, she would cry herself to sleep, hugging her pillow. Usually, the tears wouldn't stop. She liked to imagine that Edward was there next to her, but she didn't like to delude herself.

Every morning, Mustang would pay a visit to her small cottage. He always brought coffee and of course, Hawkeye. Maybe they felt like they owed it to her or even Edward. This morning was a little different though. Today, he brought no coffee and he had a concerned look on his face. Winry didn't see Hawkeye with him and glanced behind him.

"Where's Hawkeye?" she asked tentatively.

Mustang shook his head. "She stayed behind today."

Winry gestured for him to come in but he shook his head.

"I think I'll stand here today."

She was puzzled and she had no idea what was going on. "So why did you come over if you didn't want to visit?"

Mustang looked serious and he looked as if he didn't want to tell her whatever it was that he needed to. He clenched his fist and avoided looking at her. "We think we may have found the remains of your parents."

Winry didn't hear anything after that. Her whole body went cold and she started shaking. Tears immediately fell down her face and she couldn't stop them. She felt herself go down as she collapsed to the ground. Sitting still for what seemed an eternity, she slowly glanced up at Mustang.

Mustang. The murderer of my parents. We've been friends for a while, haven't we? I thought I had forgiven you but now I am not sure how I feel.

"Winry."

Mustang's deep voice brought her back to reality. She looked up at him as he extended a hand out to help her up. She didn't hesitate and she allowed him to help her stand. She glanced at him, to judge what he was thinking but she saw nothing.

"I'll come back later to discuss this further with you. I have matters to attend to."

Winry looked down and stared at the floor. She said nothing and he had nothing more to say. He swiftly walked out the door leaving her alone with her thoughts.
