A/N: This is going to be a place where I put my Bones drabbles and mini-fics which will not necessarily be related. The title for the whole story is from "Ridin' in My Car" by NRBQ (and also recorded by She & Him). Disclaimer: I don't own Bones. This was inspired by a prompt from a tumblr called writeaboutnowblr and the prompt was: "Write about someone who knows they're being lied to". I hope you enjoy!
Even though they had broken up months ago, Angela could still read Hodgins like she could read an old mangled document that Brennan needed her to repair: very well. She knew when he was lying to her. He way lying when he said he was fine right after the breakup, he was lying when he said he didn't mind her seeing other people as soon as she was ready, and he was lying when he said he wasn't in love with her anymore.
Angela found this out one of the first few weeks she was seeing Roxie. Hodgins had been a real pain in her ass all day at work—passive aggressive, snarky, and difficult—and Angela was done with it. As everyone else was packing up and getting ready to leave, she cornered Hodgins near the autopsy room. "Look, I don't know what your problem is, Jack, but you have got to quit acting like this. I've got the right to date whomever I please. We're not together, remember?"
Hodgins winced slightly when she used his first name. "You made that perfectly clear, Angela. Now, if all you needed was to come over here and throw your new relationship in my face, I think I'm gonna go." Angela looked at him and didn't know whether to scream or sob. He was being an infuriating bastard, but he could see how much pain he was in. She wanted to stop his pain, but she knew she was the one who'd caused it.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, and it was all she could do to keep from crying.
Hodgins' blue eyes grew icier. "I don't need your sympathy. I'm not still in love with you," he spat.
"Right. Of course. I know. I'll—see you tomorrow." Angela whirled around and walked out of the lab as quickly as her high heels would let her.
That night as she lay in bed next to Roxie, she couldn't stop the tears from falling, even as the woman she loved held her close. There are just some things that will always hurt, even if they aren't true.
