Getting Thinner

We're not the same, dear, as we used to be

The seasons have changed, and so have we

There was little we could say and even less that we could do

To stop the ice from getting thinner under me and you

"Owen," Cristina muttered, "This doesn't change anything. This plane crash was confirmation that I need to get away from Seattle Grace Mercy Death as soon as possible."

"Cristina I love you! I need you! I said I wanted 40 years, but I need forever and a day!" Owen pleaded with his wife, his hands gesturing for her to come closer so the chill in the air would stop giving him shivers.

"It always comes back to the same thing, Owen!" Cristina shouted as she looked up at him. "My abortion and your cheating. Deal breakers. We can't get pass them. We will never get pass them. This marriage has become toxic and when we tried to save it through therapy; we only ended up alienating each other more."

Owen's shoulders slumped and his breath left him as he stared at his wife.

We buried our love in a wintery grave

Along came the snow, was all that remained

Though we stayed by its side as the days turned to weeks

And the ice kept getting thinner with every word that we'd speak

Cristina tried to contain her tears as she took a deep breath and looked away from his forlorn eyes.

"I love you," she whispered. "I am in love with you and I will always love you, but sometimes love isn't enough."

Owen reached for her again as the reality of the situation came crashing down. She was truly leaving him. They had been through PTSD, Teddy, a shooting rampage, and now a plane crash. So much, and yet so little to show for it.

And when spring arrived we were taken by surprise

When the flows under our feet bled into the sea

And nothing was left for you and me

She hugged him tight and gently kissed his lips, savoring the feeling. This would be the last time.

"You will find a woman whom you will love more than me, who will love you equally and who will give you as many babies as you want. You deserve to be a father, Owen. You will be an amazing father. Children were never in the cards for me and I am sorry for all the hurt and pain I have put you through because of that," Cristina stepped back to take in his defeated form.

She placed her hand under his chin and lifted his face so she could look him in the eye, "I have lived more with you, loved more with you, in these last three years than I think I will again. I know what true love is because of you and I will forever be grateful and humbled that you chose to love me so fiercely."

"But, this is the end of our story. We've nowhere else to go and nothing left to say." Cristina shifted her hand away from Owen's face and backed away.

Owen kept his gaze on her as she retreated down the stairs, numb from the cold that was left behind by her touch.

We're not the same, dear, and it seems to me

There's nowhere we can go, with nothing underneath

And it saddens me to say what we both knew was true

That the ice was getting thinner under me and you

The ice was getting thinner under me and you
