Reunion

Wendy does not pay the least amount of attention either to the pirates shouting to each other as they rush about the deck below her or to those who are a mere few feet away. Nor does she wonder at how her bonds were cut and the blindfold removed without her being dropped. Instead, she simply stares in awe and disbelief at Peter Pan, in whose surprisingly strong arms she rests and who returns her stare intently.

She had truly despaired of rescue. Hook had claimed Peter was alive, but it seemed impossible. What joy began to rise quickly disappeared at Hook's strange interrogation. Her mind had been whirling; she could not understand why he asked such questions, nor the conclusion he came to at hearing her answers.

Wendy had doubted Peter would come if he was indeed alive. Had she not treated him unkindly at their parting? She had acted proud and uncaring, and Peter had become upset. She knew she had hurt him. Yet despite what happened between them last, here he is, holding her securely and close to him.

They do not speak for a moment but only gaze at each other. Wendy wants to apologize, thank him, but she is incapable of speaking. She is surprised at seeing something like uncertainty shining in Peter's eyes, as though he does not know if he did the right thing, if she wanted to be even rescued! Yet he has every right to be uncertain, Wendy realizes as she remembers with a wince the harsh words she had fired at him earlier. Does he hate her now? Yet she cannot find any hint of anger or a grudge in his clear eyes.

Lowering her eyes, she leans her head on his shoulder and tightens her grasp around his neck. She draws a shaky breath. "I'm so sorry, Peter," she whispers. "Thank you," she adds after a pause.

Her words are met with silence. Swallowing hard, she feels moisture well up in her eyes, and her heart sinks. She stiffens in shock as she feels Peter's lips brush the crown of her head. She returns her amazed, wide-eyed gaze up to him to discover a soft smile on his face. His eyes speak of his forgiveness. A smile brightens Wendy's face, causing Peter's to turn into a cocky grin.

The smiles do not leave their faces as Peter floats down to the deck, landing before the astonished boys…
