Julie and Dave Rafter had left the house with their youngest in tow before their older children did, and had arrived home half an hour later- but neither of them had expected the celebration awaiting them.
"What's all this?" Julie laughed.
"Not for you, Mum!" Rachel scolded, as Ruby eagerly darted around.
"Like we'd miss a milestone like this!" Ben agreed, laughing as Ruby tackled him onto the lounge, with surprising strength for a five year old. "You were amazing tonight, Rubes!"
"So beautiful", Nathan agreed, accepting the hug his little sister threw at him. Dropping a kiss to her brunette curls, he spun her around, making her shriek.
"I saw you all!" she cried.
"We were all there", Jake assured her, presenting the little girl with a bunch of flowers. "All your favourites, rug rat- courtesy of Carbo".
"Thank you!" giving Jake a bone crushing hug, she moved onto both Carbo and Retta. "Thank you, Carbo!"
"Star of the concert at five..." Ted let his words linger.
"What are you going to be like at ten?" Chel wanted to know.
"I'm gonna have a solo then, Grandma!" Ruby twirled around, her makeup smudged slightly around her eyes. "I saw you guys wave. Rachel, I don't think you were s'posed to have a camera".
"Ruby, when has Rachel not had the camera?" Dave laughed.
"Miss Rafter... take a bow!" Ben said dramatically, as Julie took the flowers- before they were crushed.
And, with as much flair and passion as she had done that night, Ruby Louise bowed dramatically in front of her family. All the ones that loved her.
She was their tiny dancer- and they loved her even more than she could comprehend.
