Dagger
"Well, isn't this is a pleasant surprise."
Caroline gasped at the sudden intrusion, spinning around with a dagger clutched tightly in her hand... even though, for all intents and purposes, she was the real intruder here.
There'd been another plan to take down the Originals. So what if they had all been doing a spectacular imitation of a relatively normal, peace-loving family in Mystic Falls? Damon and Stefan didn't trust them, and Caroline happened to agree.
Her part of the mission had been simple enough: break into the mansion and do some grade-A snooping while Damon did his best to keep the Originals occupied. Caroline snickered at the thought - at least this time, she wasn't the distraction.
She'd been digging around a desk in what looked to be the study when she came across an ornately decorated dagger. It had sapphire stones and an intricate design on the handle, and Caroline was in the middle of wondering whether this was a special dagger of some kind when she was interrupted by the non-intruder.
Klaus smirked at her from the doorway, nodding his head toward the dagger. "Careful where you point that, love."
Caroline straightened her spine and tilted her chin upward. If there was one thing she had learned about vampires, it was that when faced with one in a hostile situation, you did not show fear. Or blood. Or maybe she was thinking of sharks.
"I know what you're up to," she said firmly.
Klaus raised an eyebrow. "And what could I be up to? I just spent the last hour with Damon Salvatore. By the way, please tell him that next time he wants to distract someone by being their newest drinking buddy, it helps if he at least tries to not show any animosity."
Caroline narrowed her eyes. This was just an attempt to throw her off. "You're... you're lulling us into a false sense of security," she nodded as the idea began to take hold in her mind. "Yeah, pretending to call a truce when you're getting ready to attack us again." Her eyes fell to the dagger, and the piece suddenly fell into place. "And this dagger! It's for some wicked mojo spell, isn't it?"
At this last accusation, Klaus chuckled loudly, his eyes crinkling in genuine amusement. Caroline bristled. Her conclusion was the only logical conclusion, wasn't it?
"Oh, sweet Caroline, you have quite the imagination," he said finally, after a moment to compose himself. "Whilst I don't necessarily blame you for thinking that I'm up to some nefarious plan, I don't think you've found any proof. That 'dagger' you are holding is my letter opener. I'm afraid you've found my mail."
Caroline felt her cheeks grow hot. Well, that explained why it was lying on top of a power bill.
