Sunsets

After just leaving the Southern Air Temple, Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Momo are riding on the back of Aang's flying bison, Appa. Katara and Aang are watching the bright reds and oranges of the sunset over the mountains while Sokka and Momo munch happily on fruit in their seats.

"It's so beautiful, we never see a sunset like this back home," Katara said in amazement at the wondrous sight before them.

"You guys don't have sunsets at the South Pole?" Aang asked confused.

"No, but we have the aurora borealis. It's not the same, but it's similar," she confessed.

"Oh," Aang said simply. A moment later he continued, "I used to watch the sunsets out here all the time when I lived back at the temple. All the older monks always wanted me to work, and train, and I just wanted to get away from it all sometimes. So I'd come out here on Appa just to see the sun go over that horizon. It was always so peaceful, but now it just makes me sad. How can all the airbenders be gone?" He tried to hide the glimmer of a tear in his eye, but Katara saw it anyways.

"Aang, I'm sorry they're gone. There's nothing you could have done to stop the Fire Nation. But there's hope. You said so yourself that the airbenders were gone, but that doesn't mean all the air nomads are gone. Maybe in the hundred years you were in that ice berg more airbenders were born. You can't be the only one, the avatar cycle needs another airbender at some point," she said trying to sound happy to comfort him.

"I guess you're right Katara," he said as he looked away from the sunset and towards the girl next to him and smiled. She looked so beautiful with the colours of the sunset dancing on her skin, he tried to hide his smile, but he couldn't help it. "And that also means the avatar cycle needs another waterbender soon! That could be proof that there are more that can teach us at the North Pole. We can learn and then stop the Fire Nation!"

"Yeah Aang, we'll do it together," she said letting a bright smile decorate her face.
