Hey guys. Now, I'm not sure how many people are going to read this, but I hope you do, especially if you've read this story before.
What this is is my attempt at re-writing the first couple of chapters of One Piece High School, my first long story. I wanted to do this because I was looking at this story the other day and I wasn't really at all happy with the way it read, especially the earlier chapters. So, I thought it might be fun to have a go at re-writing the start of the story and this is what I came up with. Let me know what you think and whether you would like me to do this for the rest of the story as well.
Robin paused, wanting to take in the sight in front of her. It was a pretty plain looking building; it's brown brick exterior and grey slate roof distinctly lacking in any sort of bright vibrant colour. Most of the classrooms were dark, signalling they were empty and there was no one outside either, no that that surprised Robin. Classes wouldn't start for another half an hour. But she had purposely come in early just in case something went wrong; she could have gotten lost or their could have been an error with her timetable for example. Plus honestly, she felt that arriving early gave her a chance to acquaint herself to her new surroundings. It was her first day after all.
Her first day at One Piece High School.
Most people would have said Robin was a pretty impressive girl; kind, polite and remarkably intelligent, she certainly had a lot of positive qualities. That, coupled with the fact that she was definitely attractive, tall with long dark hair, would normally mean that she wouldn't have anything to fear at a new school. But then again, Robin had a secret that most girls her age didn't.
The dark haired teen took one more look at the building before heading inside, unable to shake the bad feeling at the bottom of her stomach. Was this going to be the same as before? As her old school?
Robin shook her head at that thought. This was a new beginning. Things weren't going to be the same here, no way. Robin reached into her bag, searching for the letter she had received in the mail from the school. "Let's see… I need to find a room 73," she muttered to herself.
She glanced at the nearest classroom. 65. the classroom beyond that was 66, meaning that 73 must be in that direction. As she had predicted, after walking past a few more classrooms, Robin arrived at Classroom number 73.
Robin looked into the classroom through the window on the door. Similar to the school's exterior, this classroom was very dull looking. Robin noted that the walls were completely blank. It was almost as if the school building itself was trying to give her no clues whatsoever as to what the school was like.
"Oh, hello there."
Robin stepped back from the door, embarrassed to have been caught 'peeking'. She turned to the right, the source of the voice. Standing there was a man with red hair, his expression a combination of surprise and amusement.
Suddenly, realisation dawned on the red-haired man's face and he smiled at Robin, holding out his hand to her. "Oh, now I remember… you're must be the new girl. Nico Robin right? I'm Mr Shanks, your Homeroom teacher for the next two years. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Robin took his hand and shook it slightly hesitantly, unable to shake her nervousness. She had hoped by coming into school early that she'd be able to prepare herself slightly before actually meeting people, but it looked like that wouldn't be the case. Mr Shanks smiled encouragingly at her, sensing her unease, but all Robin could manage was a small forced smile back.
After Mr Shanks had released Robin's hand, he reached into his pocket and took out a keycard, scanning it against the door to unlock it. He held the door open. "After you."
Robin nodded, walking into the neatly organised classroom. There were only six two seater tables she noticed, implying that it was a pretty small class. Mr Shanks suddenly laughed. "Man, now that I think about it, you're actually in for a real treat. Your classmates should be getting here soon, and they're… they're an interesting bunch…"
As if on cue, just then the door opened and in came a muscular boy with green hair, a somewhat grouchy scowl plastered across his face. Despite this kind of sour expression, Robin couldn't help but feel he looked kind of handsome. He yawned loudly, having not noticed Robin at this point. "Hey Mr Shanks."
"Oh Zoro, you're the first of the usual gang to get here."
Zoro frowned. "What do you mean 'of the usual-"
He trailed off, finally noticing Robin. He paused, taking a second to look over the new girl in front of her. His first thought, and one which embarrassed him slightly, was that Robin was very good looking. He inwardly rolled his eyes at that. Since when did he think about stuff like that? He wasn't like…
The door opened again, interrupting Zoro from his thoughts. In came a blond boy with an unusually curled eyebrow. The first thing he saw upon entering was Zoro's back. He scowled at his classmate, about to say something when he noticed who Zoro's attention was on.
For a couple of seconds he just stared at Robin, who stared nervously back at him. Why was he staring at her? Did… Did he know about her secret?
Suddenly, a wide smile formed on the blonde boy's face. He roughly shoved past Zoro, who glared at him once he had recovered balance, and stood directly in front of Robin, flashing her his best attempt at a charming smile. "Why hello there miss. Allow me to be the first to welcome you to our class. I'm Sanji. I assume a lady as beautiful as yourself has a suitably wonderful name…"
"R.. Robin…"
"Ah Robin!" Sanji gushed, staggering backwards slightly. "What a divine angelic name! I-"
"Oy, Dartboard brow!" Zoro shouted. "Why'd you push me out of the way? Plus, stop creeping out the new girl!"
Sanji's eyebrow twitched, something which both alarmed and amused Robin. He whipped his head around to glare at Zoro. "Shut up Moss-head, you're ruining the romantic mood!"
"What romantic mood? You're scaring her, stupid pervert chef!"
"No, it's your face that's scaring her, stupid stray moss!"
Robin watched between the two as they hurled insults at each other. She nervously glanced over at Mr Shanks, who seemed to be enjoying the 'show'. "See what I mean? And this is just the beginning…"
Suddenly, the door swung open. "Would you two shut up? I could hear you guys arguing from down the corridor!"
Standing in the doorway was a beautiful girl with long orange hair, looking angrily between Zoro and Sanji. Zoro scowled at her. "He was the one who started it…"
Sanji, however, beamed widely at her. "Wow Nami, you look so beautiful today!"
"Wow, your attention was on the new girl for like what, three seconds? You really are a love cook huh…"
"That's it, you wanna fucking go Moss-head?"
"Bring it, I'll-"
That was as far as Zoro got before Nami marched up to the two and clashed their heads together, causing them to both fall to the ground and roll around in pain. "Idiots…" she muttered, before turning to Robin. Much to Robin's shock, her angry expression instantly disappeared and she smiled kindly at Robin. "Hey, I'm Nami. Zoro said you're new here?"
"Yeah, I'm Robin."
"Nice to meet you Robin! Welcome to our school. Don't worry by the way, not everyone is as weird as these two…"
Zoro, finally beginning to recover from Nami's attack, looked up and scowled at her. "Hey…"
The green haired teen was silenced by a death glare from Nami, whilst Sanji sat up and looked excitedly between Nami and Robin, as if overwhelmed by the thought of having two beautiful girls in the class.
Mr Shanks laughed. "I'm glad to see everyone's still in as high spirits as ever. Normally some guys are a little down on the first day, but not you guys haha…"
Nami rolled her eyes, taking a seat at the front of the classroom. "That's not always a good thing, I wish these two would calm down once in a while…"
Zoro muttered threats under his breath as he sat down, taking a seat in the far back corner of the classroom whilst Sanji sat down at the front opposite corner of the room, as if to put as much distance between him and Zoro as he could. Nami smiled at Robin. "Hey Robin, sit next to me! I've gotta admit, it's gonna be kind of nice to have another girl in the class."
Robin complied, taking the seat next to Nami, happily noting that she seemed to be making friends. She also couldn't help but notice that Zoro at the back of the classroom had dozed off at this point. Nami, also seeing this, rolled her eyes. "I swear something's wrong with him. All he does is sleep and argue with Sanji."
After a couple of minutes of chatting with Nami, the orange haired girl eager to get to know her new classmate, the classroom door finally opened again, this time two people entering. One of them was skinny with long dark hair and a weirdly long straight nose and the other was short and distinctly cute looking. Robin found it hard to believe he was a teenager.
The long nosed boy waved upon entering. "Yo guys, what's up! Great to see you again Mr Shanks! Oh, a new girl? My name's Usopp and this is Chopper. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Robin smiled back at him. This was getting ridiculous now, why was everyone in this school so nice? "I'm Robin."
"Welcome to the school. Although you should probably know a few things. You see, I'm kind of a big shot here. Lots of people actually call me God Usopp-"
"Shut up Usopp," Nami interrupted. "No one's stupid enough to believe your dumb sto-"
"Really?" Chopper squealed. "I didn't know people call you God, Usopp!"
Nami sighed, whispering in Robin's ear. "Well, no one besides Chopper. I swear he's way too innocent for his own good…"
Robin giggled, finding that really sweet. She couldn't help but instantly find this 'Chopper' extremely cute. Said boy turned over to look at her and smiled cheerfully at her. "Hey, I'm Chopper! I hope you like it at our school!"
"I already think I do…"
With that, the door swung open. "OH! I'm SUPER hyped to be back at school!"
"Hey Franky," Usopp greeted. The newest arrival to the room was a tall muscular boy with short blue hair. He grinned at Robin.
"OH! A new girl! My name's Franky!"
"Robin."
"OH! I hope you SUPER enjoy our school."
As soon as Usopp, Chopper and Franky had sat down, the door opened again, a tall bony teenager the next to enter. He immediately glided over to Nami and Robin's table. "Good morning Nami! Good morning new girl!"
Nami groaned, surprising Robin. Why didn't she seem to pleased to see him? "Morning Brook. Before you ask-"
"May I please see your panties?"
Robin froze, surprised by how serious Brook's expression was. She didn't know what to say, but luckily Nami did. The orange haired girl punched Brook harshly over the head. "Of course you can't! Don't freak out Robin on her first day idiot!"
"Yohohoho… Welcome to… the school…" An 'injured' Brook weakly gasped from the ground. Robin giggled slightly. So that was why Nami didn't look too pleased to see him.
Nami sighed and turned to Robin. "Don't worry if he ever asks you that. It's just… his thing…"
Just then the bell rung and Brook sat down next to Franky. Mr Shanks looked over the class, smirking slightly when he noticed there was still one absentee.
"Jeez, even on the first day he can't get here on time…"
"What do you expect?" Sanji grumbled. "That's just the way he is…"
Usopp laughed. "It's typical him huh? I bet Ace will have dropped him off early as well, but he would have just ended up getting distracted by something stupid."
Just then, the door swung open. Standing there was a grinning boy with a Straw Hat. He looked over the class, his eyes quickly resting on Robin. He strode into the room confidently, heading straight for Robin's desk. Once he reached it, he looked straight at Robin and flashed her a friendly, but goofy grin.
"Hey, I'm Luffy! What's your name?"
######
Robin smiled as she walked up the drive to her house. She had enjoyed her first day.
Her first lesson in the morning had been Math. Robin had been put in the highest set for Math given her grades at her previous school. The teacher was Mr Mihawk, a scary looking man with a goatee and piercing yellow eyes. Honestly, he had scared Robin a little when she'd first seen him, but Nami, who was also in her Math class along with Usopp and Chopper, reassured her that he was a nice guy. And honestly, he didn't seem to be as strict as Robin had thought he would be given his appearance, so she was happy enough with her new Math teacher.
Her second lesson after a morning break had been P.E. They were playing hockey, but Robin wasn't really one for sports, so she spent the game mostly hanging back and trying to avoid getting involved as much as possible. This allowed her to watch the adjacent field where the boys were playing soccer. The star of the game appeared to be Luffy, who was an excellent goalkeeper, whilst both Zoro and Sanji seemed to be scoring goal after goal in the opposite net. Robin wasn't sure what the final score was, but she was pretty sure Luffy's team won comfortably.
Lunchtime was mostly pretty pleasant as well. Robin had sat with the eight from her homeroom class, glad that they seemed to be welcoming her into their little group. Robin found the interactions between certain members of the group really funny. There was Nami and Sanji scolding Luffy for his table manners, Zoro and Sanji bickering for no apparent reason, Nami then scolding Zoro and Sanji for said bickering, Nami scolding Brook for asking Robin to see her panties, Usopp telling ridiculous stories that no one but Chopper believed and Franky's random outbursts which Robin just didn't get at all. One thing Robin also couldn't help but notice was that Nami seemed to pay special attention to Luffy, scolding him more readily than she did the others. She wondered whether there was something between the two, although given Luffy's childish personality, she initially found that hard to picture.
However there had been one incident which had 'tarnished' lunchtime. That was when a giant, scary looking boy from the year above with a jagged nose appeared alongside the table, wanting to talk to Nami. His name was Arlong and he didn't seem to be a nice guy. Nami told him in no uncertain terms to leave, but he didn't immediately comply. It was only when he was threatened by a surprisingly, out of character from what she had seen, serious Luffy, that he had finally gone, but not before threatening Luffy, who seemed pretty unfazed by Arlong's words. When Arlong had gone, Luffy had immediately asked Nami if she was OK, the orange haired girl gratefully saying she was. After that brief interaction, the idea of there being something between Luffy and Nami didn't seem so unlikely to Robin any more.
After lunch had been the last lesson of the day, English. Robin was in the same class as Luffy, Zoro and Nami, so she sat next to the orange haired girl behind Luffy and Zoro. Their teacher, Mr Smoker, was a pretty scary guy, making it clear that he wouldn't take any nonsense. Unfortunately, there was one member of the class who didn't really get the message and a lot of the lesson was Mr Smoker telling Luffy off for pretty much anything he did or said. It probably didn't help that Luffy also insisted on calling the English teacher 'Smokey' despite Mr Smoker repeatedly telling him to call him 'sir'. In retaliation for this, Mr Smoker seemed to take special care to pick on Luffy, asking only him questions and getting only him to read his work out to the class. What was probably the funniest about their whole relationship though was the fact that Luffy seemed completely oblivious to the fact that Mr Smoker literally hated him.
As soon as Robin had opened the door to her house, she heard movement from the kitchen. Her mother, Olivia, appeared in the corridor and smiled kindly at her. "Hey sweetie. How was the first day?"
"Pretty good," Robin truthfully replied, noting how surprised she was that she was able to say that. She had feared the worst that morning when coming into school, but it seemed like she needn't have.
Olivia bit her lip, a little unsure how to approach the sensitive topic on her mind. "So… uh…. Make any friends?"
Robin smiled. "I did actually. I made eight."
Wow, I feel so nostalgic writing this again. Such an awesome feeling :)
So yeah, that was basically the first two chapters condensed into one. I do plan on trying to do this for more of this story, so I hope this first chapter was good. Thanks for reading.
