He was standing on the other side of the road with a group of his colleagues, all chattering away as the summer heat baked their flesh, with one of his hands resting on his hip acting cool. His unoccupied hand ruffled his choppy blond hair and you openly laughed at his signature black aviators taking up space on his freckled face just like they used to during sburb. You can still vividly remember how he'd smirk lazily at you from Rose's side, how he'd let out some 'sick rhymes' with both Terezi and the Mayor, but mostly, you remember how he'd wrap you close against him and press a chaste kiss onto your cheek and murmur "I love you bro". Your entire world seemed to piece together somehow and you wondered if Rose, Jade, Karkat and everyone else was walking around the world somewhere waiting to be found.
Your face hurt from the force of your smile and you simply stood on the spot reliving the game, reliving the feeling of wind and Dave. People bumped against you, jostling your form. Some even stopped to glare each letting our harsh murmurs under their breaths but you could care less. You simply stood, watching as Dave rustled with his heavy book bag, grinning. For the first time in a long time you swore you were once more the Heir of Breath, and felt the wind whip into your face carrying a heavy heat. Then just like that, it all stopped. Dave was now walking away and you were still rooted on the sidewalk.
With as much force as you carried you pushed yourself forward not wanting to lose him again. Your insides quacked in delight as you ran onto the busy street, with the wind and Dave ahead of you. Your hands reached out, trying to grasp the boy decked in red and you can almost see him in his god tier outfit, cape billowing behind him. you don't see the truck but you do feel the impact and his name rips from your throat. You swear in that moment, you were flying. Ears only hearing the crazed honking, the whipping wind, and Dave.
He and his group of friends turn their heads along with everyone else. Yet you can see, even as your face hits the asphalt, how his blood red eyes widen in recognition. And as your breathing deepens, as your vision fades, as your heart beats you know he is once again remembering. Blood rushes to your head and you are still smiling even as pain washes over you till you feel numb, and as your conscience slips you hear him one last time.
"John!"
