A/N: This is going to get a bit complicated, so be sure to read the author's note carefully.
This is part of a challenge/competition at the Digimon Fanfiction Challenges Forum called An OC for All Occasions. The idea to an OC in a main setting that serves as its "canon" material, and then be able to spin off it much like fanfictions do with canon characters from the series. Which is a bit tricky when, at the same time, the main story is in progress, but part of the challenge is how well we can potray our OCs when little is known about them and how that changes once we begin to write the main context.
This drabble is for the first of the biweekly comps on that thread: "feature your OC in a 100-300 word drabble". My OC is Mari Harumi, though I haven't mentioned her by name in this fic. She will be one of the main characters in the Chess Pieces Series, and the main character for most of the Queen sub-series. This fic is set near the start of Queen's Knight, the fourth book in that sub-series, so a lot of context is lacking at this stage (seeing as I haven't started book one yet). But all you really need to know is that Mari has been imprisoned and, to keep her from escaping, her jailor has cut off the nerve connection to her legs so she is unable to move them. Her partner, PawnChessmon Black, has turned up to rescue her.
The [CP] at the beginning of the title just annotates it to the Chess Pieces series – because I also write fics with chess stuff in its title for No Game No Life, so I don't want to get those two mixed up!
Hope that's not too confusing for anybody. Enjoy, and stay tuned for the main series!
Walking on All Fours
Something was tugging at her arm.
No, someone. Metallic footsteps. Scratchy sounds deep within a throat without words.
Pawnchessmon.
Her legs remained like logs behind her. Dead weight. All of her now was dead weight.
Pawnchessmon still tugged at her arm.
'Leave me,' she croaked.
The digimon made another noise. Tried to tell her…something. Not to give up probably.
One day, she'd hoped it'd start talking again. Not on her watch it seemed.
'Go find another tamer.' I'm not going to be helping you grow like this.
The tugging increased. Blatant refusal.
'Idiot – ouch.' She hissed in pain as her body dragged forward a little.
Stubborn little… A tear fell. She didn't deserve a digimon like that.
'You're not going to leave me, are you?'
She raised her head. She could just make out PawnChessmon shaking it's before grabbing her arm again.
PawnChessmon was going to drag her out of that place and back into the light, with help or without.
'Okay.' She closed her eyes again. 'Grab my ankles.'
She felt PawnChessmon let go of her arm and do just that. She raised herself up on her elbows, then her hands. Walking forward on them while PawnChessmon held up her feet as she'd done in training before. Her arms shook with the strain but PawnChessmon's clattering footsteps were behind her, holding her.
Stupid legs. If only I could just cut them off…
But they'd used to walk. It was the whole reason they wouldn't now.
Though if he saw them, he'd be in for a nasty shock.
That's what you'd thought you'd done, bastard.
