"Noct, I get the whole 'magic' thing, but I gotta ask, where do you actually keep all this stuff?" Prompto asked as Noctis pulled a pencil out of the ether to do his homework.

Noctis looked up and shrugged. "I don't know. It's here," he waved a hand around, "but it's not. I don't know how to explain it. You don't feel your gun, like a weight just at the tip of your fingers?"

"No, I just think about it and it shows up, and when I don't want it anymore it disappears." Prompto leaned back in his chair, balancing on the hind two legs. "So, if you don't know where it goes, how do you find it? Like, have you ever lost anything that way?"

"I used to lose things all the time," Noctis admitted, "When I was first learning how to do the magic thing I would make stuff disappear and I'd never see it again. Now, I can just sort of feel where it is." Watching how often he used his magic it was hard to believe there was a time it wasn't like breathing to him.

Prompto slowly lifted his feet off the floor, trying to stay upright on just the two chair legs. "What kind of stuff did you loose? Did you ever find it again?" He was hovering on the verge of balance, his toe tapping the floor as he teetered on just right and too far forward.

Noctis rubbed the back of his neck as he thought about it, eyes focused on some unseen memory, "I lost all kinds of stuff. Pencils, toys, a soccer ball, my dad's car keys once."

Prompto lost balance and the chair came down with a hard thud that probably upset the downstairs neighbors. Ignis would take care of it if they complained. "You lost your dad's keys? Seriously?"

"Oh yeah," Noctis grinned, "I was mad at him about something, and I stole them and put them where no one would ever find them… I just didn't think I would never find them."

Prompto laughed, throwing his head back and kicking his feet at the idea, "And he didn't kill you for it?"

"Nah, he keeps a spare set. I don't even know if he knows I did it, and I wasn't going to tell him." Noctis leaned forward, elbows on the table. "I actually found them the other day, it's been like five years."

"What, how did you find them?" Balancing act failed, Prompto fiddled with his own pencil, one that he unfortunately had to keep in a case in his bookbag.

"I just felt something I didn't recognize and it was the keys." Noctis materialized the keys into his hand to demonstrate, and then let them disappear again. He made it look like something completely natural, like anyone should be able to do it. "Not the first time it's happened."

"What else did you find?" Prompto doubted it could top the keys story.

"I found a test I completely bombed in sixth grade, I set that one on fire." Noctis said, trying to think of other specifics. "Some old toys mostly, some clothes I got for my birthday once that I hated, comic books, mostly stuff like that."

It was boring. Prompto sighed, "Must be nice though, not that it's not cool that I can do that with my gun, but just being able to have anything you want right there."

"Oh yeah," Noct rolled his eyes, "It's great, you know, until you go to pull out your sword and get that plastic one you had as a kid and Gladio destroys you during training."

"Dude, are you serious?" The mental image was too much for Prompto. "How does that even happen?"

Noctis scrunched up his face, thinking about how unpleasant the beating he'd gotten that training session had been. "Same as the rest I guess, I couldn't tell what I found, but it felt about right, until it dropped into my hand and I got my ass kicked."

Prompto was laughing so hard he thought he was going to cry. "Just please tell me that's not going to happen to me one of these days."

Noctis got a grin that Prompto could only describe as malicious. "That is a great idea."
