Blinded
The battle raged on. They had been fighting for hours. Victory seemed near at hand.
Their plans were well laid. They would accomplish their mission today. Each of them had been given a part to play in this final clash. They promised each other to hold to the plan and see one another through to the other side.
The bonds of trust and camaraderie held them together. At least, until it all fell apart.
He deviated from his mission. He had always been one to act on impulse.
She felt pangs of betrayal grip her heart once more and followed, abandoning her task as well.
"You don't understand!" he screamed desperately as invisible bonds held him captive.
Her eyes were dark, face twisted by rage, "I warned you," she said, her voice as calm as the eye of a storm, "one reason, one mistake. I won't allow you to betray us again."
His throat constricted, forcing his breath out in pained gasps. This can't be happening.
A fierce wind tore through the corridor, breaking her concentration. He fell to the floor in a heap. Her eyes widened in horror.
He was close at her heels as she tore through the palace. Upon entering, she fell to her knees at the sight. There lay her loved ones. There lay the world's only hope.
They had failed. He had failed... again.
At first, he had been the blind one, blinded by abuse, by loss, pursuing another's goals without question.
Then she had been blinded, by fear, fear that he caused. The pain of betrayal poisoned her heart, turning her into the very thing they struggled against.
Torn apart from within, they were unable to unite. They broke their promises.
The world paid the price of their inability to see.
A.N. Just an idea that's been bugging me. I really think something bad will come from Katara's death threat/distrust of Zuko. Perhaps not this bad, but hey, that's what fanfiction's for.
