"Abed?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm on the forum for your web show, and a lot of people keep mentioning this one thing between the characters. Hoyay?"

"Ho Yay. Short for 'Homosexuality, Hooray!'. Used to signify tension between two characters of the same sex of a homosexual nature. Related to the genre of fanfiction known as slash, which originated during the run of the original Star Trek, between Kirk and Spock. Kirk slash Spock, thus, slash."

"Wait, but this Ho Yay thing, is that saying that the characters are gay?"

"Not necessarily. Fandom reactions to characters are often far removed from the intent of the creator. Ho Yay just means that fans believe the characters would make a likeable couple in some way. Perhaps they have a relationship that appears especially intimate or are unusually close. Perhaps they would be 'cute' together. Or perhaps fanfic writers just have dirty minds that are drawn to pairing attractive, likeable male characters together."

"…So it just means that they're cool, right? When they say there's Ho Yay between your character and mine, it's not saying that we're…you know? It's just saying that I'm awesome and you're awesome, so together we would be, like, four times as awesome."

"You mean the characters representing us in the web series?"

"Yeah. Yeah, that's what I meant."

"Yes, the most beloved characters are the ones who are paired the most often. It can just be a matter of popularity, not an implication about the actual orientation of the characters. Fanfic writers are not deterred by truth or logic."

"Okay. Glad we cleared that up."

"Good. Do you want to come over to my room and watch movies? Or I could dig up some original Star Trek."

"Wouldn't miss it for the world, honey."
