Darling Sandy: Chapter 1

DISCLAIMER: "I came, I wrote, I did not own." You know the drill. I don't own it, I just write it. The ER characters, places and so fourth belong to NBC.

Summary: One of Doctor Weaver's worst fears comes true: her lover rolls into the ER…on a gurney.

Doctor Kerry Weaver stood at the admit desk, braced on her crutch, cherishing these few fleeting minutes of peace. She had just come out of Trauma 1, where she had done everything short of sewing back together a victim of the collision of a bus and a semi truck on the highway. She had pulled the patient through, and now she stood at the admit desk, poised and ready for another critical. What she was not ready for was whom that critical would be. She heard the distant voice of one of the paramedics, shouting, "Multiple third-degree burn victim!" Kerry sprung into action, rushing over to the large doors that served them their daily work. Asthe doors opened and the gurney rolled through, Kerry's heart nearly stopped.

She could see through the equipment shrouding the patient striking chocolate eyes and olive skin. The paramedic spoke again, "Cassandra—"

"Lopez," Kerry finished. "Trauma 2, let's go." Her heart was thundering. She was frantic. What had happened?

They wheeled her into Trauma 2, and Kerry began ordering the nescessary tools and preparations. As she did so, Dr. Chen came in wordlessly to assist. Suddenly Kerry remembered the night Chen had blown out a patient's artery. She shot a quick glance at the limp form of Sandy, then said, "Jing Mei, go get Susan, you're sitting this one out."

"But—"

"Now!"

A slight look of distain on her face, Jing Mei complied. A few moments later, Susan came in. In the back of her mind, away from her emergeny-mode mentality, Kerry was relieved. Susan was so much more compitent than Jing Mei. The two doctors worked for a few more minutes, one wishing to help a stranger, humanity in general, the other desperately trying to save a dying lover.

As Kerry worked on, sweat began to collect on her brow. She was the most capable and experienced doctor in the ER, perhaps in all of County General. She knew what she was capable of. And yet, as she saw Sandy there, helpless, something ate away at her. Seeing her distress, Susan said in a kind voice, "Kerry, I can handle this one, why don't you go to the fast-track area."

"No."

"Kerry, we all know how difficult this can be—"

"I love her, Susan."

Seeing the determination in Kerry's eyes, Susan relented, continuing to work silently, except for an occasional order to a nurse, technician, or orderly. As the two of the most capable doctors in the ER worked on, Sandy's condition continued to improve. Eventually, she opened her eyes. She looked dazed, as if a varitable pall had been drawn over her being by the god of warning. Kerry leaned in gently over Sandy's face, "Hey there, how do you feel?"

"Fine," she said with as much of that grin that Kerry loved so much as she could muster.

"What happened?" Kerry asked.

"Must have been an…..equipment failure," she said, her accent still thick. "I'll be fine…I know where to find you."

She smiled lovingly. "I'm going to get you through this, Sandy," she said, "I love you."

"I love you…." Her eyes rolled back into her head. The alarms suddenly sounded frantically. "Pressure's dropping!" shouted Helleh.
